homing
by Catarina Lay

The ‘homing’ series was motivated by the COVID-19 pandemic that impacted the entire world early 2020. Lockdown and stay at home measures changed everyone’s life. I had recently moved to the United States (as a family this was our 5th country we called ‘home’). Things were still packed and as we started to initiate this new chapter of settling, making friends, getting familiar, the pandemic begun. Suddenly we were all trapped in an empty house full of boxes in a place that had still no identity to be called ‘home’. The news were devastating. The deprivation of being with others was tormenting. I thought that if i would start to unpack, it would bring familiarity and ease missing the family and friends but i was not finding any joy in a house that had no meaning for me, that would not bring family or friends and the boxes were full of memories that would just reinforce the loneliness. Unpacking would not fill in the void. I started to register our unsurreal daily life, as i started to see my children becoming objects of the house, i registered how they were dealing with social distance and living in this new world. I created my own landscapes and alternative spaces to be. In this series i try to show the lack of normalcy we were living and the emptiness that invaded and occupied a space of a place i tried to call ‘home’.

Saudade Journal’s #2 OPEN CALL

Deadline: 15 FRBRUARY 2023

Saudade Journal draws inspiration from these terms and builds a visual map of nostalgia and the desires of contemporary artists. It explores the feeling of ‘longing’, which seems to be one shared by a generation that is looking for ‘fullfillment’ and ‘happiness’ in a world of constant change and deepening crises. What sort of desires does the young generation have? What do they long for? What do people think will make them happy? What are their thoughts and feelings about the past, present, and future that are incomplete or imperfect? What sort of feelings come with thinking about their needs and desires? Do they relate to reality, or imagination, fantasy and dreams? How does melancholy, understood as distancing into oneself, relate the presence of the young generation in social media?

Share an artwork that corresponds to the @saudade.journal research topic — longing and a short answer to the question: What are you longing for?

I long for quietness. I seek silence to balance my thoughts. In stillness I express myself.

I accept the transience and know that the constant voids will be filled with this silence, so I stop and let myself float.

Even though Catarina Lay Gomes (1974) has a degree in sociology, she is now dedicated to art, poetry, and photography. She considers herself a world citizen, having lived all over the globe. She moved to the USA with her family, this had already been the fifth country they called home. While starting to initiate this chapter of settling, making friends, and getting familiar, COVID - 19 hit the world.⁣
⁣
"Suddenly we were all trapped in an empty house full of boxes in a place that had still no identity to be called "home". The deprivation of being with others was tormenting. I thought that if I would unpack, it would bring familiarity and ease missing others but I was not finding contentment in a house that had no meaning for me and the boxes were full of memories that on the opposite created a bigger sense of void," she states.⁣
