Second day of drawing portraits with the truly inspiring @catb.studio . Truly over a weekend I made over fifteen portrait studies and learned such a lot about feeling the face ! First drawing from observation and second one was from memory. Such a great outcome and liked the second one a lot more. Thank you for a brilliant on line class .

As a part of the Faculty Show, we've turned the spotlight towards our Concord Art teachers and learning more about their creative journeys, and the roots of their teaching practices. We were thrilled to talk to Cat Bennett, an artist, author, and teacher who has been leading drawing workshops at Concord Art since 2019. Cat Bennett is an advocate for drawing, and believes that anyone and everyone can draw. When we asked her what she loves most about teaching, she said, “seeing the way people are energized by finding their own true creative expression—that they can be themselves, just where they are, and do work that is alive and interesting. It’s so exciting to witness that happening.” She said she loves to teach Concord Art students because of the variety of students, and “they’re different ages and have different skill levels”, she said, “but when we come together we all learn from each other.”

We asked Cat if there were any moments in her teaching career that stood out as special, or affirming to her teaching practice. Cat told us:

“One of the best moments for me as a teacher happened when I had just begun teaching. I had been an illustrator for many years but didn’t really know how to teach. I think it was the second or third week of class when one student began to cry. She said she didn’t think she could draw after all. Other people did it better and she’d been told in school years before that she had no talent. From that moment on, we made it a rule to never criticize or find fault, just focus on what is great. This led to everyone feeling so free and adventurous. This student continued coming to class for many years and has gone on to do some really great unique art.”

Cat went on to tell us about the relationship between her teaching and personal practices, and shared some of the best art advice she ever received. You can read the full article on the Concord Patch by visiting the link in the bio and clicking "A Conversation with Cat Bennett". See her work in The Faculty Show through December 19, 2021.

Bountiful Bookful of Personal Patterns begins next weekend, Saturday, Oct 30. It is my fifth Bookful collaboration with the lovely @catb.studio This series we will make a classic accordion book and focus on drawing patterns and hand-lettering some of our favourite quotes and poems. It’s a four part workshop via Zoom and if you live in the U.S. there’s still time to receive your kit in time for lesson No 1. There are many more details on the blog and workshop listing. As always, we like to emphasize that no previous art Or bookbinding experience is necessary. PS: we’ll be using @cambridgeimprint special starry papers for our covers. Happiness! The boxes of special starry papers will be listed in the online shop very soon! @barizaki #bookbinding #art #colour

“It’s just a piece of paper and a little bit of time “
@catb.studio such wise words over the weekend ! I have stored a set of watercolour pencils for over ten years and never really felt attached to them , this Saturday I fell in love with with them thanks to @catb.studio who made me see differently. Thankyou Cat! Her wise words always held me in good stead in her books when teaching and to see her face to face via zoom was a bonus . A brilliant course in seeing ……..

I’ve been enamored with @lisa.hardy_ beguiling watercolours for many many moons. I was thrilled when I saw them available as notecards, printed on thick & luscious card stock. They’re online and in-shop @barizaki #greetingcards #watercolour #botanicalart

During these uncertain times (Mumbai having gone into full lockdown again 😢) I have been struggling to find a way to get back to my studio and keep Making. Feels like there’s a 🌊 between us. Since the large piece is still drying I have decided to revisit other forms and techniques of creating. Vilas and I have been constructing an easel which I will be bringing back home. I am planning on working on a new 2D piece. The biggest worry is to find the same headspace and clarity the studio provides at home. Hopefully the lockdown won’t last long and I’ll be able to go back soon.🤞🏽
