Do you have a little one starting school for the first time this year?

We do! Mr 5 Will he setting off on his school journey soon, so this book couldn’t have arrived at a better time.

Why is this book so perfect for us?

✏️ It is told from the perspective of an older sibling, helping out his little brother the night before school begins. He offers his awesome advice in an understandable and non-threatening way. Miss 7 loves that she can share this book with Mr 5. The older sibling loves being the expert!

🖍️The story uses humour to engage! Yes, it’s true, the grown-ups probably will cry. 😂🥲

📚 The story is written in fun rhyme and the illustrations are colourful, with lots of details for kids to discuss. Author Kitty Black @kittyblackauthor and illustrator Cate James @catetheartist have created a brilliant book together.

✂️ We love the visual of the ‘list’ that is built upon in every spread. The child-like list is super sweet.

📏 The list gives practical as well as emotional advice. So important!

🎒 This story gives children SO much to look forward to at school. It also gently handles the difficult situations too. The ending is full of hope and love.

If you have a child starting school, I can’t recommend this book enough. There’s an extra peek inside the book in my Instastory.

I’ll be sharing more back to school books over the next few days, so save @get.kids.booked as a Favourite so you don’t miss the posts!

The Starting School List
The Starting School List is an adorable rhyming read aloud where a big brother shares his “list to assist” his little brother who is starting school.

I love the way, the older brother normalises the mixed emotions associated with starting school. He talks about learning in a positive light and he’s such a supportive older sibling that this is honestly the most heartwarming book about starting school that I have read.
It brought back memories of how my own boys look out for each other at school.
Written by @kittyblackauthor with illustrations applicable to Aussie schools by Cate James, this is definitely a book to buy or borrow for families who have a child starting school this year.

We thank @affirmpress for our #gifted #reviewcopy

Starting School

Do you have a little one starting school this year? This is the book for you!

The Starting School List by @kittyblackauthor and @catetheartist is beautiful book has sky-rocketed to my fav starting school book!

Big brother lets his little brother know what to expect, in the form of a list. I love that this rhymes. I really love that this goes through ups and downs that kids might experience and that it’s ok to feel all of your emotions starting school and throughout your journey. The illustrations are fun and perfectly aimed at primary school children.

Starting school is a huge transition and a big adventure and this book will help prep your little ones.

Thank you @affirmpress for sending us this review copy. All opinions are my own.

Let me know if you have a little one starting school, already in school or due to start in the next couple of years!

Unlocked reviews: Children’s picture book

Birdsong by the Billabong (Maura Finn, illus Cate James, Affirm)

Birdsong by the Billabong—the third picture book in Maura Finn and Cate James’s Billabong series—revisits the tone, style and structure of By the Billabong and Babies at the Billabong. All three follow a young child on a cheerful, engaging, playful excursion to an unmistakable Australian setting, cataloguing the native flora and fauna near the billabong in cumulative verse (think Old MacDonald but with more imagination and artistry). In this instalment, birds gather and joyously crescendo among the scribbly gums and the banksia, with one warbling magpie gradually joined by friends, including a ‘choir of cheeky cockatoos’ and others whose behaviour is gently anthropomorphised, such as the rock-and-roll fairy wrens. James’s illustrations are appealing: mellow yet energetic, lovingly capturing the comfortingly familiar shapes and colours of Australian plants and animals. Sharp-eyed children will delight in finding hidden feathers on each page, giving them a hint of the next bird species to be introduced (a technique also employed in the first two books). Enjoyable to read aloud, with bouncy rhythms that flow well and with a dramatic but not frightening storm at the climax, Birdsong may not extend the range of the first two books in this series but is nonetheless very satisfying for readers aged 2–7.
