Obviously a big reason we do group meet ups is so our dogs can practice being calm around other dogs. But more importantly it’s so the handlers can connect with each other. Share story’s and experiences as a service dog handler. Training your own service dog can feel lonely but it doesn’t have to. I think community is so important as a service dog handler.

I know not everyone is able to come to our meet ups so I’m working on creating an online space where service dog handlers can connect. I’m so excited to launch this new space soon.

When I’m teaching a dog to settle, one of my favorite tools is super simple: a blanket.

It might sound a little odd, but here’s why I love it and why I think you might too:

1️⃣ Treats Stay Put
When you’re rewarding a down-stay, it helps so much when the treats land right between their paws. A blanket keeps treats from bouncing or rolling away, which keeps the training calm and focused.

2️⃣ It Keeps Your Dog Clean
Let’s be real some public floors are not the cleanest. A blanket gives your dog a comfortable, familiar surface to lie on, no matter where you are.

3️⃣ It Becomes a Safe, Predictable Spot
Dogs feel more confident when they know what’s expected of them. A blanket becomes their little “home base” a signal that says, this is your spot to relax, even in busy places.

It’s a small thing that can make a big difference.
