You...

yes, YOU...

look out your window or out on to the horizon for a minute. What beautiful thing can you see? A bright blue sky? The ocean lapping at a beach? Birds landing on a feeder? Strangers helping each other on the street?

Now keep that image in your head, but turn up the colors, the beauty, the kindness. Turn it up as high as you can bear it. Focus intently on how amazing even the smallest things can be if we just have a little push to look closer or from a different angle.

That’s a taste of what Joann does for everyone in her life. I’ve been lucky to have this gift for over 15 years and don’t plan on turning down the beauty anytime soon. @jzimtaggio , you ARE the gift. You make everything more colorful, more beautiful, more kind. I celebrate you today and everyday for that gift. I love you endlessly...Happy 40 Joey, this year is gonna be a doozy.

The first time I met my father-in-law was intense. I was a young, Kennedy-loving, liberal Jew walking into the belly of a beast known as a Sicilian wedding. I was meeting the whole family...at once.
My only prep for this from my new girlfriend was this, “Stick with me, don’t fill up at the cocktail hour, don’t do anything my cousins ask you to do, they are probably testing you, and call my dad “papa”. “

I was uncomfortable meeting her dad for the FIRST time and calling him “papa”. I expressed this to her best friend, Kristen, who quickly put me in my place. “Oh don’t worry...everyone calls him Papa. Everyone.” He sat with me when I found myself alone at the wedding. This is before I could speak any broken Italian to him. He was patient with me. Hugged me, kissed me, inquired about me without an ounce of judgement or making me feel like the new guy. We hit it off immediately and became good friends over the last decade and change.
I got lucky. I chose an amazing family to be a part of and they welcomed me with wide open arms and pounds and pounds of pasta. And the patriarch of this family was the perfect representation of them all.
I wanted to share this picture because I love it and it shows the Papa that I knew and loved. He was adored by his kids (rightly so), impeccably dressed, fiercely loyal, a master tailor, a better cook than I could find in most Italian restaurants, and , though subtly, so damn funny. His sense of humor just got me and we laughed loudly and often together, especially while watching Italian television that I mostly didn’t understand.

I’m heartbroken for my wife and her family. I’m sad to lose my father-in-law after an incredibly brave battle with cancer. I’m sad to lose yet another friend. Rest In Peace, Papa. I love you. God bless you.
