In 2021 I was in the back of a production van on the way to set with DoP Morgan Schmidt and I heard him on the phone talking about filming a Burning Man documentary and I said “Hey, if you ever need anyone for that doc…I’ve always wanted to go”. A year later I get a text “Want to go to work that Burning Man documentary for 16 days? But you have to leave tonight”.

I was at the gym, I threw the dumbbells at the wall and ran out the door. I get a call from @benjilanpher and he hears something and asks “Where are you?” “Uhhh, a thrift store” “You’re at a thrift store and not a camera store?” “Yeah? 😬” “You’ll fit in perfect.” Luckily @samskalbeck was there to fill in any wardrobe gaps I had.

Huge thanks to @jilliansarettel for helping me compile a lot of these BTS photos from the burn and @kennyrodz for the NYC premiere event photos

Forever grateful to the crew I met on this job, the amount of talent, professionalism and overall just fun and good vibes on this set was immaculate. One of those jobs with a crew you truly just hope for again and again.

Five years ago, I began this journey.

The world felt like it was pulling itself apart, and I found myself chasing a story in the middle of a desert—a temporary city built on imagination, art, and the belief that strangers could become a community.

It became the most extraordinary—and the most insane—place I’ve ever filmed.

What I couldn’t have known was that the story I was documenting would become intertwined with my own.

Over these five years, I lost my father, watched my children grow into remarkable young people, moved across the world to Egypt, and somehow kept making this film—thanks to an extraordinary team working across impossible time zones who carried me through moments when I wasn’t sure I had anything left to give.

This film exists because of them.

To my producers, co-director, cinematographers, editors, composers, and everyone who trusted us with their stories: every frame reflects your talent, generosity, and belief.

Tonight, after five years of chasing what often felt like an impossible dream…

The Man Will Burn premieres on HBO. In 30 minutes.

It’s hard to put into words what that means.

To everyone at HBO, thank you for believing in this film and giving it a home. Nancy, Lisa, and Sarah—thank you for taking a chance on us. It is always a privilege to work with you.

And to my collaborators: you didn’t just help make a documentary. You carried me through one of the most transformative chapters of my life. I hope we get to create together again.

Over the coming days, I’ll share more about the people behind this film and the journey that brought us here.

But tonight, I’m simply filled with gratitude.

Five years.

After more than a year of writing music for this series, it’s become the most personal project we have ever worked on. As longtime Burners ourselves, helping tell this story through music was an honor unlike anything we’ve experienced. We’re so grateful to have been guided by our incredible directors, @jehane11 and @vkgandhi, along with our amazing music supervisor, Andrew Gross (@konsonantmusic).

To the entire crew who dedicated five years of your lives to bringing this story to the screen, thank you for trusting us to be part of something so meaningful. We can’t wait for everyone to experience it.
