From my ‘noughties’ collection, this is the autograph of the Australian model turned actress Alyssa Sutherland ( @therealalyssas )
.
Born in Brisbane and raised in Queensland, Sutherland entered modelling aged 15 after winning Girlfriend magazine’s 1997 Bonne Belle Model Search. The win led directly to a contract with Vogue Australia, giving her one of the most prestigious early debuts of any Australian model of her generation. Her international breakthrough came in the late 1990s and early 2000s with campaigns for Bulgari, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Garnier, extensive editorial work and appearances on the runway of Dior (at the height of Galliano’s tenure), Valentino and many more…and the rest is herstory!
.
📅 Period: Late 1990s through the 2000s, with continued work into the 2010s.
.
🪞 Covers: Vogue (Australia), Harper’s Bazaar (Singapore, Japan), Elle (Australia, Germany, Russia), Australian Style, Glamour (Italy), Black & White, D la Republica, Madison, Donna Moderna, Al Jamila, Prima (France), Henne (Norway), Z Magazine (Brasil), Oyster +
.
🥻 Runway: Valentino, Dior, Victor and Rolf, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermes, Bally, Marc Bower, Elie Saab, Emanuel Ungaro, Fendi, Emporio Armani, Georgio Armani, Myer, Ji Haye, Zuhair Murad, Georges Chakra, Erreuno, Alex Perry, House of Field, B Michael, John-Louis Scherrer
.
📸 Campaigns: Bulgari, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Hugo Boss, Roberto Cavalli, Gianfranco Ferre, Garnier, Kérastase, John Frieda, Schwarzkopf, L’Oreal, NARS, Laura Mercier, Avon (Russia), Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Macys, Abercrombie & Fitch, Speedo, Formit, Jigsaw, St John, Lacoste, Antonello Serio, Braun, Rosemount, Marlboro, Mimi, Aveeno, Mimco +

C A R I N E Oh Carine, where to begin? Inspiring me since I bought my first “September” issue of US Vogue, 1995. That iconic Gucci campaign from Tom’s breakout FW collection, jumped from the pages and had me mesmerised ( Carine scored the campaign after Mr Ford had fallen in love with an editorial she styled for French Glamour, May 1994. Shot by Testino and starting Nadja, it was beautifully simplistic in its minimalist approach )! Staring Amber, and captured by Mario, it was so sexy, so chic, so glamorous, and so Carine! It is my first true memory of this incredibly talented woman, and styling idol. With her combination of sex, glamour, androgyny and Parisian chicness, there is not much she hasn’t achieved in her chosen profession. ELLE, French Glamour, Vogue, Bazaar, THE FACE and, her own, CR magazine, Carine has collaborated with the best in the industry, producing some of the most inspiring fashion photography of all time. It’s perhaps during her legendary editorial leadership at Vogue Paris, however, that she produced some of her best work, often controversial, ingeniously creative, sexy and chic, it’s a decade that no one obsessed with fashion will ever forget! There are so many great editorials styled by Carine that have excited me and shaped my taste in fashion, it’s hard to pick a favourite! Over the coming month I’ll be sharing some of my most memorable and influential, created by this styling supernova, Carine Roitfeld.

Jean-Paul Gaultier’s pirate-inspired Spring 2008 collection 🏴‍☠️

“Captain Jack Sparrow is alive and well, and you could spy him tonight at Gaultier […] Like the Black Pearl, Gaultier’s ship gets around. From North American shores came the camouflage, cut into vests, trenches, and sleeveless dresses, trussed up here with military frogging and fringed epaulets. From Africa, the safari jackets and the multicolor crochet dresses. France provided the sailor sweater, done up not in the designer’s signature off-white and navy striped cotton, but in sequins and beads.” - Nicole Phelps via Vogue Runway
