POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Shouting out my favorite read of Spooky Season 2024 on this beautiful Halloween morning. 🎃

In Charlottesville Fantastic: Arcane Echoes from Virginia’s Heartland, @jamesblakeyauthor and @catsimpson_writes have collected twenty spooky, silly and uniquely Charlottesville-ian short stories from local authors. I had so much fun reading it.

The number of references to @bodosbagels in these pages warmed my heart (and made me crave and egg sausage cheddar on everything wheat like none other). I can’t tell you how fun it is to read a collection of short stories where nearly every one references a place I recognize, whether it’s the popcorn stand by the Shenandoah National Park exit, late night drinking at The Whiskey Jar or a cuppa at Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar.

The story that stands out most in my mind is “Biodynamic Aeroconducive Gels,” about a time traveler who has to create exactly the right flavor profile on a Bodo’s sandwich to get back to his time. (Note: we take our bagels very seriously here.) 🥯

I also really loved “My Housemother is a Vampire,” which tells the story of a haunted sorority house staffed by, well, a vampire.

The Book That Came Back prominently features - gasps - the dense forest of Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood. The protagonist, on her way to my farmer’s market, stops at my favorite used bookstore (shout out to @daedalusbookscharlottesville) and picks up a seemingly cursed novel that keeps finding its way back to her no matter how hard she tries to dispose of it.

If you love Charlottesville, you have to read this book. Do you have a favorite book set in your area?
