Two Nights @ Subside: Smouldering Tomb & Cattle Hammer. Isen Mund, Saarkoth, & Tigguo Cobauc.

Birmingham has more small metal venues than you’d expect from a city its size. Yet in meetings about the metal scene, talk turns to nostalgia for lost venues more often than it celebrates living ones. I think one of the best things we could do for the scene is change that.

I also realised yesterday that none of the posts on this feed contain Subside photos, so it’s time to put that right.

There are several reasons Subside is special. It does lots for the Uni I work at, giving our Metal Society a venue. It provides the perfect setting for charismatic vocalists to get in the crowd so everyone sees the whites of their eyes. But I admit there’s nostalgia in the main reason I love it: it makes me feel just like I felt at metal gigs as a teenager in the ‘90s. There’s a youngish crowd in battle jackets, with ‘80s thrash & ‘90s death patches.

Two of my favourite recent gigs have been at Subside, so here are photos from both. The first was death metal & sludge from Smouldering Tomb & Cattle Hammer. CH are mainstays of the Birmingham scene, who always put on a wild-eyed, bludgeoning show. ST are one of my favourite rising OSDM bands – claustrophobic, oppressive, & compulsive. Both bands used Subside right – frenzied vocalists up in the faces of the crowd.

This Sunday, Subside gave us an unforgettable night of black metal. First up, Isen Mund (Stoke). They let me take a few photos as they put on paint. Then they gave a proper show – tortured & icy, vocalist drawing the crowd right into the horror. Next Saarkoth whipped up a theatric frenzy (inc deer skull) & some of the heaviest drumming I’ve seen for a while. Headliners Tigguo Cobauc immersed us in their weird sludgy world, bass player also giving a frontman performance.

Subside is a dream for fans, less so for photos (red light with bright blue & green spots mean most have to be b&w). But I want to make sure the Why Metal Matters gallery represents day-to-day metal, not just glossier festival shots, so have added LOADS of small venue pics - link in comments.

Thanks to the fantastic promoters - Phil the Room & SYD.
