📙4 x 4 Book Challenge📙

I was tagged by Jade @literaryphdelights on this challenge a wee while ago (thanks Jade). I’ll tag some people but you may have already done this in which case, please just ignore! Consider yourself tagged if I haven’t.

4 books I bought recently:

📕 Love Forms - Claire Adam
I picked this up in a charity shop in Kendal on our BMB trip. Just love that cover and have heard a couple of Booktubers mention this recently so figured I’d buy a copy. Booker Prize longlisted last year too.

📕 Death at the Sign of the Rook - Kate Atkinson
I bought this at the charity shop yesterday. I’m collecting the Jackson Brodie series and haven’t read any Kate Atkinson since her early works.

📕 East of Eden - John Steinbeck
I bought this in @toppingsyork a few weeks back and I’m currently reading it alongside watching the new Netflix series.

📕 Mother Mary Comes to Me - Arundhati Roy
A recent purchase from the BOGOHP tables in @wstonesmhall. Heard only great things about this one and I know lots of people thought it would win the Women’s Prize for nonfiction earlier this year.

4 books on my tbr:
(These are all on my Kindle)

📙A Private Man - Stephanie Sy Quia
So many bookstagrammers I trust have raved about this one and I don’t think I’ve heard one dissenting view.

📙 The Infamous Gilberts - Angela Tomaski
Gothic and darkly funny apparently so sounds like a perfect Autumn read to me.

📙 The Mercy Step - Marcia Hutchinson
A Yorkshire author with an MBE and an impressive CV, and a book that almost won the Women’s Prize for fiction this year. I know plenty of bookstagrammers who would have been more than happy if it had.

📙 People in Love - Claire Daverley
Our Jo has enjoyed this and Talking at Night this summer so I’m keen to pick it up having not read her work before.

4 books I rated 4 stars

📕 A Guardian and a Thief - Megha Majumdar
This book has actually really stayed with me so equally could have been on the next pic too. Impactful story telling.

📕Celestial Lights - Cecile Pin
A strangely compelling, slow moving story with a melancholic air about one man’s dilemma, torn between aeronautical ambition and living a life on earth.

📕 The G

My “Autumn Fever” temperature has not dropped. 😄 This verse from To Autumn by John Keats is kind of my life motto. Thank you, @caulusdictyo for mentioning it to me. ✨🎵🍁🫶

Are you also having “Autumn Fever”?
What are your symptoms?

PS: Not very often, but I do make/print my own postcards :) Do you ever print or make your own postcards? 📮

A bright Sunday today at my place, and I am catching up slowly with you all. Thank you for not forgetting me while I am travelling and playing organ. Especially thank you to @backtothebooks__ for tagging me for the challenge #10ungefragtefakten (#10unaskedfacts). I think it is a nice way to get to know each other more. So, I will tag some of you for this challenge, anyway, consider yourself tagged when you read this!

1. My clumsiness is beyond rescue. Yesterday, I showed up at the wrong cinema until my friend called me and asked, “Where are you? Which cinema are you at?” Luckily the advertisements were long enough for me to get there on time for the movie.
2. My recurring nightmare is showing up at the wrong church on Sunday to play organ, panicking, and then waking up.
3. I love doing things manually, like scrapbooking, knitting, folding paper, and colouring.
4. Therefore, I am a stationery freak.
5. And I collect loo rolls for making crafts.
6. My organ is also my bookshelf.
7. Because books are my refuge, especially Narnia.
8. I have many favourite composers, but J.S. Bach is the composer of my heart.
9. And Van Gogh the artist.
10. My favourite podcast is Timothy Keller’s Gospel in Life.

Picture taken by my mother while we were waiting for the train at Hannover Hbf.

The May read for our lovely #quietclassicsclub co-operative group is, The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer- chosen by @salboreads. I’m really looking forward to this one, I’ve read a few Georgette Heyer books in the dim and distant past but not this one.

The cooperative has been formed by a few like-minded former members of the brilliant Vicky’s- @antipodeanbookclub - #quietclassicsclub & we are merely keeping it warm for her while she takes a well deserved break. Come back soon Vicky!!

If anyone would like to join in this read please drop me or @salboreads a dm to be added to the friendly chat.

QOTD - have any of you read this, or any other Georgette Heyer novels? If not your genre what book would you be happy to read-read?

With my birthday a week away I wanted to do a Birthday Scavenger Hunt with more personable prompts that are more about the relationship with your books than the books themselves.

What stories would our books tell about us given the chance?

📚 A book from your childhood

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘰𝘣𝘣𝘪𝘵 by J.R.R. Tolkien

This is actually the same copy I’ve had since I was eleven years old.

📚 A book you enjoyed as a teen

𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘻𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘙𝘢𝘮𝘢 by Arthur C. Clarke

A science fiction novel that remains one of my all time favorites. I’m still waiting on the film adaptation.

📚 A book you checked out of your school library

𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘪𝘯 by Mary Shelley

It was also my introduction to the artwork of Boris Vallejo, who did the cover art for the copy my elementary school had.

📚 A book that was published the year I was born

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘵 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘳𝘢 𝘗𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘦𝘳 by Jennifer Lynch

A “TV spin-off” of one of my all time favorite shows, 𝘛𝘸𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘴.

📚 A book you were gifted

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 by Clive Barker

A few months after receiving this book I would meet Clive Barker in person. The first time I met an author whose work I was a fan of.

📚 A book that changed your perspective

𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘘𝘶𝘪𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵 by Erich Maria Remarque

The book itself being semi-autobiographical, it focuses more on the conditions of the soldiers instead of heroics of bravery which up until that time is all I had seen.

📚 A favorite cover

𝘏𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 by Chuck Palahniuk

This is a favorite cover because it glows in the dark. Reading in bed, it scared me the first time I turned off the lights and saw that face. It’s a shame newer editions don’t have this feature.

📚 A protagonist you relate to

𝘒𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 by Haruki Murakami

The way the protagonist approaches his work and art are very similar to my own.

📚 A book with a favorite quote or passage

𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘋𝘰𝘸𝘯 by Richard Adams

A book about rabbits which is actually a fantasy adventure. I love the part of the book about the creation myth and belief system they follow.

📚 Poetry Scavenger Hunt 📚

April is National Poetry Month started by @poetsorg so to celebrate the poets in your life here are nine prompts to show off your poetry collection.

📚 A translated poetry collection

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘖𝘤𝘵𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘰 𝘗𝘢𝘻 edited and translated by Eliot Weinberger

I first read Octavio Paz’s book 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘣𝘺𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘦 which then lead me to his poetry and how I first learned about @ndpublishing

Octavio Paz also wrote the definitive biography of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz which is on my TBR

📚 A poetry collection by a poet that also writes novels

𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 by Julio Cortázar, translated by Stephen Kessler

Another example of an author whose poetry I discovered through wanting to read more of their work. This collection was published by @citylightsbooks posthumously and represents a wide range of Cortázar’s poetry.

📚 A selected or collected works edition

𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘢𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘢 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 translated by Ursula K. Le Guin

The selection by @ursulakleguin was almost completely subjective. According to her, personal taste and prejudice led her to some and away from others. Love and language lead where they will.

📚 A debut poetry collection

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 by Jim Morrison

@thedoors has always been one of my favorite bands and in high school I actively sought Jim Morrison’s books of poetry.

📚 A bilingual poetry collection

𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 by Hermann Hesse, translated by James Wright

While many of the books featured here are bilingual editions this is one of the few I have that is in English and in German.

📚 A poetry collection under 100 pages

𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘚𝘢𝘯 𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰 by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

📚 A favorite poet

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘵𝘦 𝘛𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘥𝘨𝘢𝘳 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘗𝘰𝘦

📚 An epic poem

𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘴𝘵 by John Milton

📚 A poetry anthology

𝘈 𝘛𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘗𝘰𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘺

Today I am stacking blue and animal themed books in memory of the goodest chap I have ever met on here.

Pippin @salboreads was a friend to me. My boy. Both him and Sally opened me up to Bookstagram: a new community where I found friends, buddy readers and lovely book advices. I learned that Vinted sells pre loved books and this cost me an arm and a leg😂

Can you see how much Pippin has done for me over the last 5 years??💕This stack is for you sweetheart❤️It feels a bit weird without you but thank you for sharing the path with me and with many others.

Over the month of April, Sally is donating £1 to @the_blue_cross (up to £60) who cares for strays to rehome and help people who can't afford or struggle with the vet bills.

What you have to do to support? It's easy!

💕Stack blue (or books with animals)
💕tag @salboreads
💕Hashtag #inmemoryofpippinstackforacause

Please, stack wildly for our Pippin!!❤️❤️
