Beach Sessions Dance Series celebrated its 12th season on Rockaway Beach with a new site-specific contemporary dance work by choreographer @alaxawast.

Exploring the body’s relationship to landscape and image, West used sand as both stage and material -- transforming the shoreline into a cinematic canvas where movement and terrain continually shape one another.

Presented in partnership with our lead sponsor @therockawayhotel, with generous support from 7G Foundation.

Amusement, a new work by Alexa West
Commissioned by Beach Sessions
Performed Saturday, Sept 12, 6pm
Rockaway Beach, Queens

Drawing on decades of cinematic and televisual dance that privileges entertainment, spectacle, and effortlessness—from 1940s Hollywood musicals to 1980s Italian variety shows—Alexa West reinterprets, and at times distorts, these onscreen choreographies, producing a work of pastiche that estranges as much as it cites.

Choreographed by Alexa West
Performed by Tim Bendernagel, Isabelle Dayton, Cayleen Del Rosario, Benin Gardner, Amelia Heintzelman, Jordan Lloyd, Owen Prum, Molly Ross
Artist Assistance by Olive Bonner
Dramaturgy by McClain Groff
Sound Design by Alexa West
Speaker Design and Fabrication by Material Service
Scenic Design by Alexa West and David Selig
Scenic Fabrication by Ozcelik Carpentry and NYC Parks Department
Produced by Morgan Griffin and Sasha Okshteyn

Pageant Presents Pageant, a day-long marathon of 25 short works, part of Pageant’s Studio residency at MoMA.

Starting with the visual frame of the red stage, the marathon itself became a total artwork: a score for community, made visible through the radical adjacency of 25 artists. Each retains their own distinct influences, methods, and approaches to performance-making, yet through the act of sharing a stage—first in their life together at Pageant in Brooklyn, and then in the Kravis Studio—their practices reflect onto one another, creating something greater than the sum of its parts. Community becomes visible not as consensus or unified style, but as proximity and values: as artistic points of view held beside one another.

Thank you to @maymakki1 without whom this wouldn’t have happened, and thank you to everyone whose labor, visible and invisible, went into this day of spectacle, movement, and joy. @pageantpageantpageant @alaxawast @owen.prum @lilidrkker @sharleenchidiac @jademanns @luizarepsold @lizziegorfaine @pauldp123 @new.monicaaa_ @nnneeeevvvvvaaaaaa

Control—like all dances—was made alongside and in conversation with my friends: my artists, my teachers, and my greatest sources of encouragement! Many of these conversations are private, but recent writing by Tess Michaelson in The Brooklyn Rail, Jack Merriweather in Culturebot, and Miya Schaffer in Impulse Magazine brings some of our shared questions into public view. Thank you to Tess, Jack, and Miya—I’m grateful to see my cast’s collective devotion to beauty, rigor, and strangeness reflected back to me through their words. 🩷

Thank you to everyone who came, thank you to CF and endless love to Cayleen Del Rosario, Amelia Heintzelman, Owen Prum, evan ray suzuki, Madeline Best, Kate Williams, David Leon, isa crespo pardo, and Matt Evans 🩷 Photos and dance by me
