WE MADE IT! After an extended stay here at #RISmachine Lori's 1978 Super Beetle finally went home earlier this week.

The main event was to rebuild the tired and leaking, nearly 100k mile 1600cc fuel injected engine.

The engine was dropped out, completely disassembled and rebuilt. The bottom end reused the original engine case, which still measured standard on the main bearing bores. Stock crankshaft, rebuilt stock rods, reground stock camshaft - basically a bone stock short block. Things got more interesting in the top end with new 87mm pistons and cylinder for 1641cc and a little boost in compression to 7.9:1. The small valve fuel injection heads were replaced with 100% new #Autolinea 35.5x32 heads.

Taking the turn key engine assembly to the next level was satin black powdercoat on all the original VW engine tin by Jim at New Image Powdercoating. Stainless steel phillips head tin screws were used at every opportunity when putting the cooling tin together. I paint detailed the intake plenum with Seymour aluminum cast blast and steel ends in a gloss grey. New fuel injectors were installed, along with all new vacuum and fuel hoses, new fuel pressure regulator, and every L-jet component was detailed and tested (twice - don't ask). Kyle Automotive supplied one of his excellent new fuel injection harnesses, which looks and performs better than the nearly 50 year old original. Spark is supplied by the original DVDA distributor checked out and tested by Josh at Aircooled Dynowerks and a new 12V Beru coil. Exhaust is handled by a set of NOS VW heat exchangers, and the rest of the components were ceramic coated by Jim at New Image Powdercoating.

My goal was a "better than new" appearing engine, and EVERY part was given some attention before installation.

During the car's stay here, it also received a good once over including new firewall insulation, engine bay seals, new transaxle mounts, gear oil change, new clutch cable, new seat track guides, and a few other fixes.

After cam break-in, an oil change and valve adjustment, I laid down 100 miles with this new combination. Then another oil change and valve adjustment, then sent it home... onto the next one.
