I was looking forward to the U.S. Amateur for two years. I spent nine days there during practice rounds up to the penultimate day, and those long days flew by. I wrote in an ATC update this week about some of the interesting, effective, maybe even innovative maintenance that is done there, especially regarding sand topdressing, or more specifically, the lack of in-season disruption of any sort. I wanted to see, with my own eyes, and measure with my own tools, the surface conditions on greens prepared for a national championship that hadn't been topdressed all year. The results and the conditions exceeded my expectations, and it was so much fun to work with the talented team from @hazeltinenational and the @usga to prepare the course each day.

Is it summer yet? ⏲⏳⏱

10-month old IronCutter bermuda in mid-June 2021 @boilerfootball. Dense, weed-free, & better mowing tolerance in comparison with another leading cold-tolerant bermuda. ✅✅✅

IronCutter on left at @lifeatpurdue’s Turfgrass Research Center. Spring Green-Up in northwest Indiana. Another leading cold-tolerant Bermuda right. 🏆❄️☑️

Initial install in late summer 2020, pics from April 2021 at the Daniel Turf Center. @usdagov Hardiness Zone 5B (-15 to -10°F/-26.1 to -23.3°C average annual min. temperature).‼️🥶

“The IronCutter is the much darker green ones, as it had already started warming up & it wasn’t really that warm here at that time. We were all VERY impressed.” -Brian Bornino, CSFM, @purduesports
