Black Sea Law Company recently had the pleasure of delivering a guest lecture for graduate students of the Shipping Programme at Copenhagen Business School.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Iryna Savelieva, Acting Rector of Odesa National Maritime University, and Professor Martin Jes Iversen, Associate Professor at Copenhagen Business School, for making this valuable academic and professional exchange possible.

The lecture focused on the students’ research into Single Purpose Entities (SPEs) in dry bulk shipping and the legal implications of complex corporate ownership structures within the maritime industry. It was a great opportunity to share practical insights from our legal practice, discuss real-world industry challenges, and engage in a stimulating and thought-provoking Q&A session.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this dialogue and support the next generation of maritime professionals.

Yesterday, we hosted our annual midsummer seminar on geographical balance in the EU institutions together with the Permanent Representations of 🇫🇮, 🇳🇱 and 🇩🇰!

Geographical balance refers to ensuring fair representation of citizens from all EU Member States within the EU institutions’ staff. A diverse European civil service matters: EU officials bring not only expertise, but perspectives, languages and experiences that strengthen policymaking and legitimacy. Yet significant imbalances remain. Sweden, like several other Member States, is underrepresented – particularly in entry-level positions in the Commission, where the gap is growing.

Mikaela Kumlin Granit, the Swedish EU Ambassador, opened the discussion, underlining that geographical balance is not a side issue but a core priority for a credible and effective union. She stressed that this issue requires persistence and cooperation, as well as data, transparency, and accountability. Encouragingly, EU institutions are now stepping up with new tools, including nationality-specific competitions and stronger frameworks.

The seminar continued with a discussion between Magali Gravier (@cbs.mba) and Leo Brandt (@delorsberlin, @thehertieschool), who contributed with perspectives from academia on representation, representativeness, and legitimacy.

After that, Ellen Robson (@europeanparliament) and Emanuele Baldacci (@europeancommission) provided insights from the EU institutions on ongoing and future efforts to promote geographical balance.

The message from yesterday’s seminar was clear:

🇪🇺 Awareness of the scale of imbalance has improved – now it must lead to measurable change.
🇪🇺 A shift towards more targeted measures marks important progress.
🇪🇺 The coming years will be decisive in showing whether sustained efforts can lead to a more balanced and representative EU civil service.

From Sweden’s side, we are investing heavily in the future pipeline: more support to candidates, strengthened EU-focused education, and increased opportunities to build EU careers.

Many thanks to all the speakers and to our co-hosts Jenni Hakala and Tristan Schyns for an excellent discussion!

The Season of Graceful Pause

Many call Autumn the most beautiful season; the colors, the falling leaves, the quiet shift in the air.

But if we listen closely,
Nature is offering us a lesson….
there is a time and place for everything.

A time to plant.
A time to grow.
A time to harvest.
And a time to pause.

As the leaves begin to fall,
Nature reminds us of the beauty in letting go…in closing chapters, releasing weight, and preparing for renewal.

May we, too, move through our own seasons with mindfulness, grace, and divine timing.

Perhaps this too, is your season to pause, reflect, and realign.

Begin your next chapter with intention at
