September started with a family wedding in Charleston and ended with a best friend bringing her new book tour to Charlotte.

In between? Seven talks. Three auctions. $1.1-million raised for charity. Two countries. Three states. Eight cities. A workshop in a living room. 20 new Wave members. One fast Summit sellout. And at home: soccer, baseball, chess club, flag football, swim team, cross country, volleyball, one HoCo (one to go) and a Kure Beach surfboard surprise.

Full calendar. Full heart. Full month.

Documenting. Never want to forget these days.

Betting.

Happy.

Windshield, not rearview. Go get it.

Took my oldest boy away this weekend on a trip just for him. Kure. One last summer weekend. Hutch turns 12 next month but October is slammed and no time to surprise him around his actual birthday… so, this was it.

The birthday surprise was even better a month early. He didn’t see it coming. Picked up him and one of his dearest and oldest friends at school Friday. They didn’t know why I was there. Didn’t know why bags were packed in the car. Her wonderful mom, a good friend, also came. The four of us made it real road trip.

Then this morning, surprise #2: Hutch’s first real surf board. I thought through every way to get it back to Charlotte to surprise him next month as it’s his birthday gift but, no real way to hide the 6-footer in the car. So we surprised him this morning. He screamed. Immediately asked to wax it up and take it out.

No great waves. And, it started to rain. Didn’t matter. He was thrilled to give it a spin. On the car ride home to Charlotte, with the nose of it peeking up from the third row next to his seat, he asked if can store the board in his bedroom. Not the garage.

He wants to be able to see it when he wakes up.

Whether Hutch loves surfing forever isn’t the point…

…the point is, take time to make the moment happen.

Even if it doesn’t fit a calendar.

Even if it doesn’t make total sense.

Make the moment happen.

Fitting in a beach weekend right after the hectic-ness of Summit 4.0 sales and before a wild week of travel ahead for me wasn’t convenient. Years from now, I’ll never remember my schedule. I’ll remember his excited face. I’ll remember his joy over a weekend for just him and his friend, not having to share me or time with a sibling. I’ll remember the cheap bow I bought at CVS and stuck on the top of the board.

I’ll definitely remember his decision to use it instantly. To, quite literally, dive in.

I kinda think he’ll remember all that too.

Find the time. Make the moment.

Hug your kids.
