“My family came here after the Vietnam War in the early 80s as refugees. They were sponsored to go to Florida, then went to Alabama, and eventually migrated to Ohio. A lot of places where there were zero resources for Vietnamese communities in terms of language. Growing up as a kid I watched my family struggle with language barriers, with judgement and with prejudice from others because their English was broken.

When you’re a kid, you know English, but you don’t know taxes. You don’t know the words. When you’re the middle person at a young age, it can be very diminishing. Your parents expect you to translate. “You’re supposed to know how to speak English. Why can’t you translate for me?” But, you just don’t know the words. Sometimes the topic is too complicated as a kid, as a 10 or 12 year old. You have to build tougher skin. You stay focused on the words and being the bridge between whoever and your parents.

I got older and my Vietnamese got better. I saw my grandma recently and it’s like I never knew her. I could talk to her, understand her mannerisms a lot better, her choice of words. And she can finally see me, too. She didn’t really know anything about me growing up because of the language barrier.

It’s an experience you would only know if you are bilingual. You start to recognize how different a person appears to you when you can speak their language.”

Started as another monochrome drawing but learnt new techniques on procreate midway through. Changed to a black and white approach to get the values right and then adde the color :)

I really need to practice portraits because the hardest part of this piece was getting the face right.
