As we enter another week under our new structure it is very clear that the amount of labor being asked has already become unmanageable.

When a position is eliminated or a staff member is laid off, the work doesn’t vanish into thing air.

It is just piled on and on and on.

Recent meetings with leaderships we have already shared that staff cannot meet these demands and we are going to start to see staff experience burn out and even deal with stress related medical concerns.

The college needs to commit to the investment of staff in these offices. We need more staff, we need promises that we will get our actual job descriptions in a timely manner, and that we will have more foresight on how to meet operational needs that are not at the expense of our livelihoods.

Enough is enough. We need action, not promises. The promises we have already been given have already proven hollow and without true accountability.

Please, we need help. We need Columbia to show that they care about its staff, that it cares about its faculty, and most importantly that it cares about the success and well-being of its students

This week we have two strong testimonies to share.

What strikes us in both of these are the immediate impact that these layoffs have had on our students.

Us in student facing offices have already counseled students who are saddened by the layoffs.

Many of those let go communicated to us that what hurts the must was the immediate shut down of their emails. Many didn’t get to say goodbye or even leave an opportunity to help their students keep in touch.

For those of us who are left we are struggling with the weight of our new duties. Not duties that were assigned but duties we had to take on because without us doing so, Columbias operations would cease.

How are we supposed to operate without managers? How are we supposed to serve our students in a manner that they deserve?

These choices again are reckless, and show complete disrespect for staff and for students.

As we continue to bargain we are holding strong that this cannot continue. We will not allow our grace and duty to serve be taken advantage of.

The Admissions Department was hit very hard during this round of layoffs.

With recruiters out on the road, the absence of those we lost is potent. We cannot keep up with the demand of what is being asked by Columbia’s administration.

The school visits, the fairs, the tours, the appointments that our ex colleagues leave behind are not gone. They are thrusted on the skeleton crew that lives on and who have to continue to do the work.

A quality contingency plan was not given to management in admissions, we are just expected to do more work with no additional pay, no structure, no guidance, just the new increased goal that we are expected to hit for our next incoming class.

Comrades please see USofCC’s statement on the current layoffs that have impacted virtually everyone at the college.

We will be sharing employee testimonies in the coming weeks to highlight the deep impacts these cuts have had on not only the staff but the students at Columbia College Chicago.

It is important that leadership understands these actions have been reckless and are unacceptable.

We encourage members to share our posts as we continue this series, submit their own testimonies to us, and continue to sign up to observe our open bargaining with the college as we negotiate a new contract.

In Solidarity Always and Forever

It all started with this quote. An insignificant remark from a teacher my senior year of undergrad.

I wasn’t even supposed to be there. It was an elective I took to capitalize on the max number of credit hours included in my tuition, which I always made sure to do. However, this term, I had already completed what I *needed* to take to graduate. I had 3 credit hours to do what I wanted with. A true elective. No constraints.

I signed up for a painting class taught by Sabina Ott. I had always been curious about painting but didn’t think much about doing it myself, other than craft projects or painting bedroom walls, which I did frequently. At first, we did group exercises, like painting still lifes of wads of clay to practice shading techniques. But then we got to do our own project.

There I was: a graphic/commercial design major, showing up to a class of *actual* painting majors, with a massive, hand-stretched raw canvas, larger than me, holding my abstract art. Everyone else hung reasonably sized paintings on a pegboard for group critique.

My stomach dropped. I thought I’d missed a detail in the syllabus. I said to the teacher with a laugh, “Omg, mine’s huge, where should I put it?” as a simple, practical question (since mine literally wouldn’t have fit with everyone else’s).

She must have read the look on my face or sensed the knot in my guts about my ‘mistake’, because, as she made room for me on another wall, she stated so simply, “Don’t be afraid to take up space, Katie. The world needs more artists like you.”

At the time, my day moved on, and I didn’t think much of it. The impact of that statement didn’t hit me until much later.

I ran into her in a gallery in Hyde Park a few years after graduation. I saw her from across the room and wasn’t sure if she’d recognize me from that one-off class I wasn’t supposed to be in. She did.

And I think that’s when I started to understand what she meant.
