CLARKSDALE, Miss. — Every HBCU campus cultivates student leaders who elevate their institutions through scholarship, service, and vision. Ja’veon Kevontre Dennis-Howard, the 20th Mister Coahoma Community College, leads a tenure defined by academic distinction, faith, and campus engagement.

A native of Goodman, Mississippi, Dennis-Howard has established a strong academic record at Coahoma Community College. He is a full scholarship recipient, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and earned a 3.9 GPA during his his semester. He is currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration with plans to transition into Civil Engineering.

Operating under his platform motto, “Don’t put a period where God puts a comma,” Dennis-Howard focuses his leadership on resilience, growth, and expanding opportunities for student connection across campus. His efforts highlight the essential role that two-year HBCU institutions play in shaping the next generation of academic and professional leaders.

“My platform is centered around growth, resilience, faith, and making the most of every opportunity. I believe God often uses delay for our development, and my goal is to encourage others to keep pushing forward even when things don’t happen on their timeline.” — Ja’veon Dennis-Howard

I never truly know how to fully express myself verbally and emotionally with these opportunities.

On October 8, I have the honor of bringing The Story of Ben Williams back to Oxford for a screening and community conversation at the University of Mississippi.

I’ve spent a lot of time with this story, still learning, traveling, interviewing people, and trying my best to tell Ben’s life with the care it deserves. To now have an opportunity to share it on the campus where such an important part of his journey took place is significant.

And I want this room to extend beyond the Flagship.

I’d love to see our surrounding colleges and universities represented. Coaches, student-athletes, athletic departments, students, professors, administrators, historians, storytellers and anybody who simply cares about sports, Mississippi history, and the people who helped move our communities forward. Come sit with us. Bring your teams, students and questions!

I’m grateful to be joined in conversation by W. Ralph Eubanks, Dr. Charles Ross, and James M. Reed, three people who bring their own experiences, scholarship, and connection to this history.

A huge thank you to the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, African American Studies, Luckyday Residential College, Ole Miss Dining, and everyone behind the scenes who believed in this idea and helped us create a space for this conversation.

And, as always, thank you to the Williams family for trusting me with Ben’s story. That means more to me than I can put into an IG caption.

More than four years ago, Dr. Franklin “Frank” Chukwuma, then associate director of Land-Grant Programs at Alcorn State University, saw an opportunity and challenged Doris Miller, 4-H educator, to establish a relationship with Coahoma Community College that could create a pathway for students to pursue agriculture at Alcorn.

The idea was later brought to Dr. Victor Njiti, chairperson of Alcorn’s Department of Agriculture, who helped lead the work to move the vision forward.

Yesterday, after years of conversations, planning and collaboration, that vision became a full-circle moment.

Dr. Dexter B. Wakefield, dean and director of Land-Grant Programs, and Coahoma Community College President Dr. Valmadge Towner signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a 2+2 pathway that allows students to begin at Coahoma, earn an associate degree and continue at Alcorn toward a bachelor’s degree in agriculture.

Faculty and staff from both institutions were there to mark the occasion, including Miller, who helped begin the relationship more than four years ago, and Dr. Melissa Mason-Montgomery, Alcorn’s associate director of Land-Grant Programs.

The partnership aligns coursework in plant and soil science, animal science, and agricultural economics while creating opportunities for hands-on learning, research, internships and career development.

What started as a challenge to build a relationship is now a pathway to greater educational opportunities for students.

A big thank-you to Mrs. Kyrie Antici, Executive Director, and Mrs. Catrina Hardy, Project Manager, with Coahoma Community College Workforce Development for visiting Lee Academy today and sharing valuable information with our students about the many training opportunities available right here in Coahoma County!
Coahoma Community College Workforce Development offers a variety of programs designed to help individuals get trained, certified, and prepared for high-demand careers; often in just a few months instead of years! 🙌
Students learned about hands-on training opportunities including welding, forklift operation, HVAC, residential and commercial wiring, phlebotomy, and more. They also learned about the affordable cost of these programs and the short amount of time it takes to gain real-world skills and certifications that can lead directly into the workforce.
These opportunities are especially valuable for students who may be considering a career path outside of the traditional four-year or two-year college route or for those who want to gain valuable skills and certifications before continuing their education.
We appreciate CCC Workforce for taking the time to invest in our students and show them that there are many different paths to a successful career! 💚

Why should you consider Coahoma Community College? We’re glad you asked!
-
1. Not ready for a 4-year institution yet? CCC was the first educational institution for Black Americans to be included in Mississippi’s system of public community colleges! 🎓

2. Along with other great academic programs, Cosmetology, General Studies, and Vehicle Maintenance and Repair are some of the most popular majors! 📚

3.With a rich history, this institution started out as a high school in 1924! 🧑🏽‍🏫

Could you see yourself at @ccctigers ? Let us know!
