How do you get a community to care about a bird they may know little about? Angie Tang ’28, a communication and animal science student in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, spent her summer as a Cornell Cooperative Extension summer intern at the Cornell Biological Field Station near Syracuse, helping more people discover the common terns of Oneida Lake. Angie created educational resources, visited schools and summer camps, connected with local businesses and helped launch “A Tern in Every Town” — a scavenger hunt featuring 3-D printed tern figurines placed around the lake. Through her outreach, Angie reached more than 15,000 people, building awareness of a species whose numbers have declined dramatically and whose nesting habitat continues to shrink. Along the way, she found inspiration in the terns themselves and their determination to keep trying, even after storms destroyed many of their nests. Thank you to Angie for her work this summer and for her contributions to common tern conservation! 🌿🎉 WE REACHED OUR GOAL! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! 🎉🌿 We are thrilled to announce that CPF has met its $500,000 fundraising goal for the Schapiro Farm Legacy Fund! Thanks to an incredible outpouring of gifts from our community, donors, friends, and partners, we have reached the finish line—and taken a major step toward permanently protecting 370 acres of fields, forests, wetlands, and shoreline along Eatonbrook Reservoir. 💚 We’d like to extend a very special thank you to the Eatonbrook Lake Community for your tremendous support of this campaign. Your generosity, enthusiasm, and commitment to protecting this special place have meant so much to CPF and to the Schapiro family. 💚 To everyone who gave, shared our posts, entered the kayak raffle, encouraged a friend to donate, or simply cheered us on: THANK YOU! Your generosity made this possible. Your commitment to conservation has secured the future of the historic Schapiro Farm. Together, we have reached this incredible milestone—and we couldn’t have done it without you! (Aerial photo by EPV Media)

Your kids don’t have to grow up on a farm to benefit from agricultural youth programs. 4-H, FFA and programs like dairy ambassadors give young people opportunities to build confidence, practice public speaking, take on responsibility and grow into leadership roles. As @_tess.amanda_ , a 4-H educator with @ccemadisoncounty, says: “They are our future CEOs.” If your kids are curious, encourage them to get involved. Agriculture has room for them, too. #WomenOfDairy #4H #FFA #AgEducation #FutureLeaders

Working 9 to 5… or 7 to whenever the farm needs us. 💜 Before the school buses start rolling and backpacks replace work gloves, we're soaking up the last days with some of our best farm workers. The farm kids have been busy this summer: 🌿 Debudding lavender 🚜 Mowing hay 🐄 Milking cows 📦 Filling ag bags and packing orders 🌱 Learning the work behind the business …and generally keeping us on our toes. I love watching kids grow up knowing that work isn't just something you clock into. It's caring for something. It's showing up when there's jobs to be done. It's learning that sometimes the work is hot, dirty, repetitive, and still worth doing. And it's understanding that a family farm is built by generations—not just one person. We're going to miss our summer crew when school starts. (Although I'm sure the kids won't miss the "there's always something to do" part quite as much. 😉) Thank you to our farm kids for being some of our hardest-working hands this summer. We couldn't do it without you. 💜 #Farmstead1868 #FarmKids #FamilyFarm #BackToSchool #9to5

Deer Hill Wagyu 🐮❤️ I had the privilege of visiting this local Wagyu farm in Upstate New York during Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Open Farm Day event. Lee (Owner) and Tod (Farm Manager) were so kind and hospitable, and their passion for what they do was something you could genuinely feel throughout the farm. The Wagyu cows were lively, calm, and clearly well cared for, which felt like a reflection of the environment they were raised in. Visiting Deer Hill made me optimistic about the future of the meat industry. It showed me firsthand that it is possible to raise cattle in a way that prioritizes their well-being while still producing high-quality beef. As someone interested in the food industry, experiences like this remind me how important it is to understand where our food comes from and the people who make it possible. Check them out!! @deerhillwagyu

Swiss Mountain Farms 🍁 This beautiful maple business started 4 years ago as just a family hobby. They’ve managed to grow from 50 taps to nearly 4,000 in this time, and are now making about 1,800 gallons of maple syrup annually! The Russells have managed to make impressive strides while juggling multiple responsibilities. Mark and Joanna both work full-time jobs and have built this successful operation around their busy schedules. I was blown away by the growth they’ve made in such a short period of time. The facility was amazing and so was the maple syrup! Before this, I didn’t know I needed maple syrup in a hot sauce, but now im a hardcore advocate.  Thank you to @swissmountainfarms for being open to make this video and trusting me with your story. I hope you all enjoy this short as much I enjoyed making it.  Stay tuned for more!!

Open Farm Day was a blast! After visiting 16 farms that day I was WHOOPED. My favorite stop had to be Doc Marshall Farm, formerly known as ARISE at the Farm. Between the photos, meeting new people, and petting horses, it was a pretty great day.

Despite their name, common terns are becoming anything but common. This summer, Cornell Cooperative Extension intern Angelina Tang ‘28 is working with researchers at the Shackelton Biological Field Station to develop outreach materials that educate the public about the threats facing common terns and the conservation solutions that can help protect them. A communication and animal science student in Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Angie has spent the summer visiting Oneida Lake’s nesting colonies, documenting fieldwork and seeing firsthand how conservation research becomes public outreach. The colorful rocks you see in the reel are nest markers that help researchers count and monitor common tern nests. 🔗 Learn more about Angie’s summer internship.
