Would you tow your van through this?!

Did anyone actually keep count of how many water crossings are on the Gibb? We stopped after about 20. Between the endless corrugations, red dust, and deep crossings, this track isn’t just tough on us, it’s tough on the car and van too.

Regular checks are a must out here:
🔧 Tighten bolts & check suspension.
💡 Keep an eye on wiring and lights.
🛞 Inspect tyres after every long stretch.
🚰 Watch for water getting into seals.

Hot tip: we keep a thermal heat gun on hand to quickly check brakes, bearings/axles, and shock absorbers. Here’s what to look out for:

Brakes - after driving, all brake drums/discs should be a similar temperature side to side. If one is much hotter, it could mean that brake is dragging or sticking.

Wheel Bearings / Axles - A healthy bearing will usually sit around the ambient + 20–40°C (so on a 25°C day, expect ~45–65°C). If one hub is significantly hotter than the others, it’s a warning sign the bearing may be failing or too tight.

Shock Absorbers - Shocks will warm up on corrugations. That’s normal. What you’re looking for is consistency, if one shock is much hotter than the rest, it may be overworking (or the others aren’t working at all).

Quick Rule of Thumb - Consistency is key → all four wheels/brakes/bearings should be in the same ballpark. Anything that feels “out of line” = investigate. If it’s too hot to touch with your hand, that’s already a sign something’s wrong.

One of our most challenging and adrenaline-pumping 4x4 tracks yet.

We didn’t capture much footage outside the ute, but trust us—this one’s a serious test of both driver and rig!

Just 35 km north of Kununurra, tucked along the breathtaking Ord River, you’ll find a discreet entrance track (check WikiCamps) that sneaks up on you. From there, buckle up for an 8 km off-road adventure that took us about 1 hour and 20 minutes—thanks to our wider setup—though it’s typically around 45 minutes.

This track is no joke: 21 river crossings in, 21 out, winding through loose shale, dry riverbeds, and rugged terrain. At times, we had the ute balancing on opposite corners, flexing the suspension to its limits. A hard hit to the driver’s side step left us with two proud battle dents—souvenirs from one wild ride.

But every scrape was worth it. The track ends at a serene waterhole and cascading falls—a true hidden gem.

As we parked, a fellow traveler approached and said with a grin, “Not the kind of car I expected to see make it through that track and end up here!”
Now that’s the kind of compliment we’ll take any day.

Aaaaaand we’re back baby! 💪🏻

As much as we absolutely love NT, we’ve done what we needed to do, got the part fixed on the car, had the car serviced, experienced Territory Day fireworks, got our fix of salt water again haha, I (Grant) flew home briefly and now we’re making our way back, ready for THE GIBB!! 🫨

A little nervous but so keen! Going to tick a few things off our list around Kununurra first before we make our way to El Questro!

TIME FOR SOME HELPER BAGS!

When we had the lift and tyres done we were very budget conscious and wanted to see how the car performed before spending more money.

After some time and although the new suspension setup is chalk and cheese to the stock gear, we felt the rear still sagged a little with the Van on.

Our ball weight is roughly 385kgs with 180kgs in the rear tray of the Ute (fridge, battery, kids toys, tools, blow up SUP etc.

So, it was time! Spoke to @partsmandan who did our suspension setup and he recommended and organised the bags for us. With a 2.5” lift in the rear we went with @bossair double bellow bags.

I (Grant) was able to fit these in a couple of hours and then it was time for the location of the air valves. Not wanting the valves in the elements or visible from the back (didn’t really want to drill into the rear bar either), the best location for us was in the tub, as we’d need to open it each time to get the the air compressor anyway.

All set and done, the bags run about 45mins to get the car and van back to level and couldn’t be happier.

Yes, we spun the top plate on one side so that bolt didn’t interfere with the leaf springs.

The tracks are a blast to drive, the scenery is stunning, and believe it or not—it used to be a free camp!

Located within the Finniss River Station, this area includes the Finniss River Mouth, Five Mile Beach, and Stingray Head.

Pack your lunch, bring some chairs and your fishing rods, and spend the day soaking it all in—you won’t regret it.

A little insight into our Chevy 2500HD and why we chose it.

So we have a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. So 2500 being the big 6.6l Turbo Diesel V8.

A lot of people know what these cars come with, a lot of people don’t. Hence why we thought we’d share this and explain why this was our reasoning.
Power, Comfort, Tech, Safety and all round looks were the reasons we went this way (not necessarily in that order). Although we didn’t want anything this big to begin with, but not knowing anything about caravanning and thinking well, we’re going to have everything we own in the car and caravan, we weren’t sure what the weights would come back to. Going worst case scenario and assuming a fully loaded 3.5t van would be full, our GCM on most other cars was gone.

Our Tips for Caravan Hook-up Day!

When we first started camping in our camper trailer, somewhat new to the towing world, we found a little piece of info that helped when it came time to hooking up and making sure you haven’t missed any connections.

With all the wires, cameras, protection products that we have now on the vans, it can be overwhelming initially if you’ve remembered to hookup, clip, connect and lock everything off.

This little bit of information helped us, and hopefully it will for any new or new-ish people to the towing world.

Our system is that we have Ten (10) items to hookup. You can go a step further and have a procedure on what items to do in a list. For example we tend to do the main ones first then finish off the rest of the cables.

So our Ten (10) in the order we do is:

1. D045 hitch pin.
2. Jockey Wheel.
3. LHS Van chain.
4. RHS Van chain.
5. Breakaway pin cord.
6. 12pin Trailer plug.
7. Grey Anderson plug.
8. Safety Dave Camera plug.
9. Stone Stomper.
10. Handbrake.

Now this will vary for everyone both how you want to hook it up and how many you have. Our camper trailer had Seven (7) things.

We’ve travelled now for - little over two years and (touch wood) we haven’t lost anything yet. We couldn’t imagine losing something or having the pin drop off because it’s overwhelming, and this prevents it from happening to someone after seeing this, happy days.

Feel free to share your procedure, the more ways people do it, the more people can see and find a way that may suit them.
