ARE WE SLEEPING ON DEVIN YOUNG? 👀

Here’s a 2027 linebacker at Clarke Central whose football résumé is a little more interesting than people might realize.

Devin Young has already played DL, DE and MLB, giving him experience at multiple levels of the front seven. He’s been listed around 5’9”-5’10” and 205-215 pounds, giving him that compact, physical linebacker build.

But here’s the part college coaches should notice:

🏆 Young earned SECOND-TEAM ALL-REGION 8-4A honors as a defensive lineman during his junior season at Cedar Shoals.

Now he’s listed as a senior LB at Clarke Central.

That’s intriguing.

You’re talking about a linebacker who has spent years fighting blocks in the trenches. A defender who understands what it’s like to play with his hand down AND stand up behind the defensive line.

💥 Physical frame
🧱 Comfortable in traffic
🏈 DL / DE / MLB experience
🎯 All-Region recognition
📚 Class of 2027

GVS TAKE: Young profiles as a downhill MIKE/inside linebacker who could potentially provide additional value as a pressure player and on special teams. The next step is getting verified athletic testing and his senior production in front of college staffs.

This is exactly the type of senior prospect coaches should be putting on the evaluation board before assuming they already know everybody in Athens.

College coaches… take a look at this one. 👀

Clarke Central Football recognized Chuck Smith as a Gladiator Great at halftime of Friday’s Clarke Central vs. Cedar Shoals game.

Chuck was a member of the 1985 State Championship team and finished his Clarke Central career a perfect 4–0 against Cedar Shoals!

A member of the Junior College Hall of Fame, Chuck went on to star at the University of Tennessee, earning First-Team All-SEC and Honorable Mention All-American honors before being named an SEC Football Legend.
Selected in the second round of the 1992 NFL Draft by the Atlanta Falcons, Chuck played nine seasons in the NFL. He was an All-Pro, four-time Pro Bowl alternate, and five-time Falcons captain, and helped lead Atlanta to its first Super Bowl appearance.

And this year, Chuck adds another honor to an incredible career as a member of the 2026 Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame class!

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming home a true Gladiator Great, Chuck Smith!

Members of the Class of 2028 attend the first CCHS pep rally in two years and show their class pride with a spirit sign. To get prepared for the 60th Classic City Championship against Cedar Sholas High School, the CCHS pep rally brought students from different grades together, honored student-athletes and recognized students’ school spirit. “My first pep rally was really fun. There was a lot of energy and fun things going on,” freshman Mary Margret Williams said. “(Pep rallies are) important for school spirit by including all the grades and getting everyone to make signs and just get involved with your school.” Photo and story by Maypop Wren.

Clarke Central High School varsity football running back and linebacker Faustino Rangel, a senior, completes a play during the Classic City Championship against Cedar Shoals High School in Billy Henderson Stadium on Sept. 18. The Gladiators maintained a lead throughout the game, going into halftime with a score of 10-6 before coming back and scoring two touchdowns to end the game with a final score of 24-12. “We had a tough first half, and I thought we responded real well (by) just keeping (the players) on the course,” CCHS varsity football running backs coach Jack Mangel said. “Defense carried us all year and they kept doing the same thing. They locked (Cedar) up and they gave us great field position to score to start the second half. I think the two touchdowns at the start of the second half is the reason we won the game.” Photo and graphic by Kye Streetman, story by Lea D’Angelo

Photos from previous Clarke Central High School varsity football games are shown, with this year’s Classic City Championship set to take place in Billy Henderson Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 18. Last year’s championship was a close match, with the Clarke Central High School Gladiators beating the Cedar Shoals High School Jaguars with a final score of 13-12 after a second half comeback. “(After last year’s game,) it’s a little concerning, but this team’s different. This team’s a different personality,” CCHS head varsity football coach David Perno said. “Anything can happen in a rival game, so we just have to protect our kids and make sure we’re not thinking it’s going to be easy, because that game’s never easy.” Photos from the ODYSSEY archives, story by Lea D’Angelo
