Day breaks and with it floods back all the emotions numbed by the cover of darkness. All the paranoia we should’ve felt all the questions we refused to ask. Most of all, we wondered if we had overstayed our welcome and how we’d pass the building staff unnoticed. 6:30am the city awoke with a jolt, rushing cars and constant honks took the air by storm. The sirens were blaring close again, and the energy was palpable. One last ascent for one last shot. I climbed the spire faster than before, it feels like the energy of this morning has overtaken me as well. I hug the top with one arm and walk as FIDI sweeps below my feet, 3 steps and I’m looking to midtown, 3 more, and i’m over the Whitehall St ferry. The sun which we hadn’t expected to see, breaks through a thick of clouds for just one moment. In-between the cracks, a dark red eye watches us commit to these last few minutes. 3 more steps, and I’m standing over my friend as he brings the drone in. We make our way into the building, becoming as small as we can, we retrace a trail of well-placed steps silently back out to the street.

Deep into the night there’s no better contemplative piece than the city shimmering below you. Occasional sirens and honks spaced by long stretches of ambient silence and light wind. I expected to be met by an eclipse of moths up here like the last time it was warm out. I was met with no life on the spire other than my friend. Everything about that night was a pleasant surprise. We talk about anything for hours staring into the pit of light below. Deeper into the night now, my mind is trailing on in tangents of incoherent thoughts. I haven’t slept in a very long time. Weeks of poor sleeping habits have led me to a moment where distinguishing whether I’m awake is less than easy. I don’t mind one bit, the best moments have never felt very real regardless. It’s not even that late anymore at this point, 4am and workers begin to occupy high-rise office spaces preparing for the workday ahead. Only a few peaceful minutes of the night left now.

Blizzard - Portra 400 - Of the roll I shot that day, these were the only frames that were salvageable. Scarred by the conditions of one of the worst snowstorms this year. I was in between posting these and not for a while, but I’ve come to appreciate the way they represent the storm. Its harshness imbued into the physical negative of the image. To me, they look as the day felt far more than any of the digital I shot.

Another one of the increasingly rare snow storms was predicted in the forecast. It was a must-shoot type of day. Williamsburgh Bank Tower had been in my mind since I was a kid. Its unique dome roof specifically was a point of increasing mystique over the years. It would catch my eye from all angles throughout the city. From being the tallest building in Brooklyn to nearing full obscurity today by the newer buildings around it, I felt it especially important to capture this one now. After some time and much effort, we found ourselves at and through the last hatch. The dome was coated in a thick layer of ice and the ice blanketed again by snow. Likely from its one massive steam vent, this dome had all the traction of a skate rink. Soup and I were constantly reminding each other to move cautiously, there was no room for a slip up top. The storm was at a height snow hammered down as we shot. My hands quickly went numb, the wind stinging my face, each step made in faith, this one felt like a dream.
