Beyond Carnival, Trinidad & Tobago holds a rich artistic history shaped by memory, territory, the body, and a Caribbean identity in constant transformation.

From the modernism of Sybil Atteck and Peter Minshall’s transformation of Mas to the contemporary practices of Christopher Cozier, Che Lovelace and Nadia Huggins, different generations have developed distinctive visual languages through which to address identity, history, society and territory.

Five artists. Different generations. Five ways of approaching the complexity of a single artistic landscape.

A tiny selection of Casa/Portale, a photo-performance autoportrait. Chris Cozier's work, Home/Portal, allowed me to pass through my father’s home, a part of myself that appears when I return to visit my biological family.
Identity con-fusion, facing a family routine that is not mine; adjustments, disappearance, and hypervisibility; love and inadaptability. This project is a photographic self-portrait about myself and the meanings of that Home.
I am Home, I am Portal.

BACKSTAGE of Casa/Portale 2026 in collaboration with @ccozier50 Chris Cozier's Home/Portal. From the @venice.art.biennale 2026 to Verona, northern Italy. This is the beginning of a collaboration where Home/Portal was embodied by my family roots. Photo-video performance made of autoportraits. What is Home? To me, Home is the Portal itself. A big thanks to my cousin Giuseppe Pomari and Moussa Basri; without their help, this project wouldn't have happened.

Alice Yard is celebrating 20 years.
My video ‘Unease’ was the first screening at their space. I’ve included stills and short clips from the original video.

This space has always been welcoming to artists, especially young ones.

‘Unease’ was originally projected onto a cracked wall at Alice Yard in 2006 in a small enclosed dark room.

It examines the idea of the uncomfortable, with direct reference to the female subject – her body, her societal roles, and the politics of her place within the home.

The satirical eight steps to normalcy – or eight steps to being a natural or ideal woman -emotively depicts the psychological experience of several nameless female subjects, who try to fit themselves into accepted roles that they do not desire, or that they are forced to pursue.

There are ambivalent and some antagonistic representations of female tropes: The Wife, The Slut, The Mother to be, and The Girl.

Female angst is still stigmatized as “bitterness”, rather than seen as a real expression of circumstance, and a call to alleviate inequity.

‘Unease’ is a video installation that screened as part of ‘Visibly Absent’ – a series of exhibitions hosted by ‘GALVANIZE in Trinidad, September to October 2006. Projected in a very dark room, in a small concrete box, it was the first art project to be screened at the Alice Yard Space.

Starting in Ecuador and the United States, Flip It & Reverse It: We Are One with All There Is is evolving into an international series of exhibitions and convenings, focusing on how spirit-infused art can impact the future of humanity and the planet.

Our PAMM Convening begins with this online conversation, “Where and Why,” featuring Flip It & Reverse It supporters from institutions across the Americas, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and Australia. Together, they will visualize the project tour and discuss how its meaning shifts across cultural contexts, why it resonates internationally, and the shared vision of building a global network of artists, (Afro) Indigenous cultural bearers, curators, scholars, and organizations committed to reimagining the change-making potential of art in society.

Next stop Venice....being so close and knowing that so many Caribbean and diasporic artists were exhibiting we had to make the stop.

Easy and inexpensive flights from Athens, so wish inter Caribbean travel could be so accessible don't you?

Biggest disappointment was that the Grenada pavillion was closed so I couldn't see Eddie Bowen's work and although I got to see Chris Cozier's work (slide 18) missed Grace Aneiza Ali who featured one of my pieces in the Journal of Indentureship and Its Legacies.

Big up Chris and Annalee Davis who's installation (slide 7) was in the main pavillion

Big surprise was seeing Maggie Otieno's work(slide 19). We did the Kuona Trust's residency together in Kenya.

A few other highlights...the India Pavillion (8) ,the Bahamas Pavillion (11-13) and the sculpture by Wangechi Mutu. I was moved to see the poem by poet Refaat al-Areer at the entrance 🙏🏽💜
