Today I closed the chapter on my blue belt journey the best way I could have asked for.

🥇🥇🥇 Triple gold.

And then, standing on the podium, I got promoted to purple belt. 🟣

I’m 44 years old, weighed in around 80–81kg, and decided to challenge myself by competing in the adult medium heavyweight bracket, which went all the way up to 88.6kg.

Definitely wasn’t the biggest guy in the division. Definitely had some tough competition.

But I came to compete.

And I walked away with three gold medals and a new belt.

More than anything though, today made me think about all the people who helped me get here.

First, I have to thank my professor, Chris Crosby.

Black belt, MMA champion, Sambo champion, and the man who has coached me from white belt all the way to purple belt.

He promoted me to blue belt, and today he was the one who promoted me to purple.

He flew in Friday from the USA, spent the day coaching me today, and has continued supporting my jiu-jitsu journey over the years. I appreciate you, Professor. For real.

I also want to thank Professor Dwight Lloyd at Ascent Jiu Jitsu. For about the last year and a half, he’s been helping me sharpen my game during noon jits, giving me advice, correcting things, and helping me continue to grow.

And I can’t forget where everything started.

Coach Abdul Sahibil. Coach Jojet Cifra Baliente. Coach Adrian Gallardo Aquino.

Those were my original jiu-jitsu coaches when I first stepped onto the mats. A lot of the foundation I still use today started with those guys, and I’ll always appreciate that.

And to all my teammates along the way, from my old gym to the team I train with now, thank you.

Everybody who gave me advice.

Everybody who showed me something.

Everybody who rolled with me.

And especially all the lower belts who have had to suffer underneath my pressure while I figured this stuff out 😂

Every round helped sharpen me.

Jiu-jitsu is an individual sport when you step onto the competition mat, but nobody gets there by themselves.

Today I got the medals.

But a whole lot of people had a hand in building the grappler who earned them.

Blue belt chapter closed.

Purple belt journey starts now. 🟣🥋

🚨 MATCH ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

🥋 Purple Belt Superfight 🥋

Donald Wilkinson (Fight School MMA)
vs Michael “The Bipolar Roller” Aubin (Baton Rouge Jiujitsu)

Donald Wilkinson makes his Groundworks Submission Fighting debut looking to make an immediate statement. Representing Fight School MMA, the purple belt brings a wealth of experience with seven MMA bouts, multiple superfights, and gold medal performances across several grappling tournaments. He also enters this matchup with a previous gi victory over his opponent, giving him the confidence that he’s done it before.

Standing across from him is one of GSF’s fan favorites, Michael “The Bipolar Roller” Aubin.

Representing Baton Rouge Jiu-Jitsu, Aubin returns with a 1-1 GSF record and plenty of momentum. At GSF 4, “The Bipolar Roller” delivered one of the night’s most impressive performances, securing a dominant victory by north-south choke and reminding everyone why he’s become a fan favorite every time he steps onto the GSF mats.

Wilkinson already owns a victory in the gi.

Aubin gets the opportunity to settle the score under the GSF ruleset.

Will Wilkinson prove history repeats itself, or will “The Bipolar Roller” earn redemption and continue his climb through the purple belt division?

🎟️ Tickets available now.
