In 2009, Junya Watanabe collaborated with Levi’s to create military-inspired pants that blended utilitarian design with high fashion. This collaboration exemplified the growing trend of high fashion brands integrating streetwear and military aesthetics into their collections. A unique aspect of these pants was the use of vintage Levi’s denim, reworked with military-style details, showcasing Watanabe’s innovative approach to design. Junya once again demonstrated his exceptional creativity and individuality while simultaneously paying homage to Levi’s and their traditional style.

In 2016, Junya Watanabe’s Spring/Summer collection featured African-inspired designs, including the use of Ankara fabric, which sparked discussions on cultural appropriation. A unique aspect of Watanabe’s collaborations with Carhartt is his approach in 2010, he purchased 100 Carhartt jackets directly from a store and customized them himself, rather than collaborating with the brand’s design team. Junya Watanabe’s Carhartt is a staple in my wardrobe. I genuinely believe his pants are of exceptional quality, characterized by aesthetically pleasing designs and unparalleled comfort. These pants are undeniably highly versatile.

The Kapital Skeleton Bone Velour Souvenir Bomber Jacket is a fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and contemporary streetwear, featuring intricate skeleton bone embroidery on velour fabric. This design pays homage to vintage souvenir jackets popularized by U.S. servicemen in post-WWII Japan, blending cultural heritage with modern fashion sensibilities. A unique aspect of this jacket is its reversible design, offering two distinct looks in one garment. This a relic garment, this jacket will not be sold (as of now) but this is one of those jackets where you just wear once or twice and then tuck it away. FAVORITE PIECE.

Kapital’s skeleton sweatshirts are emblematic of the brand’s deep connection to Japanese culture and its reinterpretation of Western motifs. The design draws from the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, embracing imperfection and transient beauty, while incorporating Americana influences, particularly the rebellious spirit seen in vintage biker and punk scenes. This blend reflects Japan’s post-war fascination with American culture, fused with traditional Japanese craftsmanship. A unique fact about Kapital’s skeleton sweatshirts is that each piece often features hand dyed and hand stitched details, employing techniques like boro and sashiko. These traditional methods not only enhance durability but also add a distinct, artisanal character to every sweatshirt, making each one subtly unique. One of my favorite pieces because of the variety of outfits it can be paired with. Hands down, my favorite Autumn piece. The neutral gray color is versatile enough to complement almost anything in an average person’s closet, and the bones add a touch of flair to any style you’re trying to achieve.

Kapital’s cardigans are a striking example of how cultural influence and uniqueness converge in fashion. Founded in Japan, Kapital draws heavily from traditional Japanese aesthetics while blending in Americana and vintage influences. The brand’s cardigans often feature intricate sashiko stitching, bold patterns, and patchwork that reflect Japan’s rich textile history. Each cardigan is unique, often designed with asymmetry, distressed details, and vibrant, unexpected color combinations. This reflects Kapital’s philosophy of “imperfection as beauty,” rooted in the Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic. The brand challenges conventional fashion norms, encouraging wearers to embrace individuality and cultural appreciation. When you’re rocking Kapital clothes, it’s a great idea to match their unique style each time! I especially love combining them with sashiko-stitched jeans or trousers, really anything that screams traditional Japanese vibes. That makes Kapital a GREAT pick for holiday outfits!

KAPITAL JAVA KASURI FLEECE ZIP: The brand’s designs often incorporate techniques like sashiko stitching and boro patchwork, reflecting a deep appreciation for imperfection and history. Under the creative direction of Kiro Hirata, Kapital has gained a global following, with pieces like the Java Kasuri pattern fleece zip blouson exemplifying their innovative approach to fashion. The ‘Java Kasuri’ pattern fleece zip blouson exemplifies this approach, incorporating traditional Indonesian ikat weaving patterns into modern fleece material, showcasing Kapital’s commitment to cultural appreciation and innovative design. Designed by Kiro Hirata, the blouson features a shaggy red polyester fleece knit with an allover beige abstract ‘Java Kasuri’ print, highlighting the brand’s dedication to intricate patterns and quality craftsmanship. This jacket was one of the most expensive I have ever purchased, but once you acquire it, you will be thoroughly satisfied. I was so excited upon purchasing it that I considered using my children’s college fund to buy five of them.

Kapital, founded in 1984 by Toshikiyo Hirata in Kojima, Japan, is renowned for its innovative denim and eclectic designs blending traditional Japanese techniques with Western influences. The Bandana Bivouac sweatshirt exemplifies this fusion, featuring a bandana-patterned front and quilted nylon back, symbolizing the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and cultural storytelling. GORPCORE-007: 🐺 The North Face Summit Series Papsura FUTURELIGHT Jacket is a lightweight, breathable, and waterproof shell designed for alpine activities, utilizing the innovative FUTURELIGHT, 3-layer fabric made from 100% recycled nylon. Its minimalist design, including features like a harness-compatible hood and underarm gussets, enhances functionality and comfort during high-intensity pursuits. The jacket’s cultural influence is evident in its name, inspired by the Papsura peak in the Indian Himalayas, reflecting a blend of performance and global mountaineering heritage. Throughout my childhood, I did not exhibit a preference for North Face clothing. However, during the winter months, which are arguably the most favorable season for fashion, my mother consistently included a North Face garment in my school bag due to the uncanny weather conditions. This practice undoubtedly contributed to my current love for North Face products. Shout out to moms for that!

GORPCORE-006: 🌸 The Beta SL has gained cultural significance, especially within the ‘gorpcore’ fashion movement, blending outdoor functionality with urban style, and has been featured in collaborations with brands like Concepts, enhancing its appeal in both outdoor and fashion communities. The jacket’s minimalist design includes two hand pockets and an internal chest pocket, and it is constructed with durable materials to balance weight and longevity. I recall purchasing this jacket due to the hereditary nature of breast cancer within my family. (Also, I felt like Killa Cam back in ‘04) During my childhood, I was informed by my grandmother of her diagnosis, which instilled in me a profound sense of fear and the possibility of losing her. However, she demonstrated remarkable resilience and tenacity in her battle against the disease. With unwavering commitment, I extend my heartfelt assurance to my grandmother that I will always stand by her side.

GORPCORE-005: 🪻 The Arc’Teryx Beta SL jacket is renowned for its minimalist design and high performance capabilities, making it a staple in both outdoor and urban fashion scenes. Its sleek silhouette, lightweight construction, and premium materials like GORE-TEX Paclite Plus offer a refined aesthetic while ensuring superior weather protection. The jacket’s clean lines, subtle branding, and tailored fit resonate with minimalist and techwear enthusiasts. Its versatility allows it to pair seamlessly with streetwear, casual outfits, or layered with more structured garments, making it a dynamic piece in any wardrobe. This was my final Arc’teryx jacket, which I acquired with sentimental value due to its association with my mother’s preferred color. Ironically, my mother does not share my fashion preferences, yet whenever I bring anything purple into her presence, the warmth in her eyes always evokes a sense of comfort and affection within me!
