Mom’s Greenhouse Happy (early) birthday and Mother’s Day Mom! Having your birthday and Mother’s Day so close together is kind of like having a December birthday, it’s a bit of a raw deal, so I wanted to make something extra special this year! This is a painting of the greenhouse my parents built in their backyard. So many of you have enjoyed summer vegetables from my parents that have started from seeds inside of it (I personally am eagerly awaiting the first tomatoes of the season!) My family loves the greenhouse, it overflows with sweet smelling flowers and herbs and is the perfect spot for a glass of wine in the late afternoon. We spend most of the spring and summer chasing the shade, moving adirondack chairs from under my parents giant pecan tree to the shade of the pergola behind the greenhouse. It’s truly a ma gical and peaceful place! Anyway! My young mother Midge’s self portrait. She hated to have her picture taken. The canvas captures the complexity of her personality. It was said “she leaves beauty in her wake”. She was constantly creating beauty. She was a New York Yankee in small town Texas. She painted, sewed, was always the best dressed, decorating, while being intensely loving and demanding, she did nothing “ordinary”, she was always inspiring. She followed in the footsteps of her mother Mildred who had a similar life as did her sister Jo Anne. She drove A Corvair, then a Karmen Ghia, 240Z, followed by a Porsche. WAY back in college I attempted to make a quilt out of linen I hand dyed and block printed... well I never got around to actually doing the quilting part SO my mom finished it and NOW my sister (who was promised the quilt 8 years ago) finally gets to cuddle up under it! #teamwork 📸 @spcoleman318
