We’re celebrating 20 years of Free Dirt at the @brooklynfolkfest in early Nov! This will be your first chance to grab a copy of our anniversary compilation which features 12 previously unreleased recordings from artists such as @willicarlisle, @cinder_well, @kaiakater, @vivandriley & more!

We are also curating some fun programming including a bunch of shows as well as a workshop discussion that will be the *first time* we’ve ever publicly told the story of the label! Hope to see lots of friends there. This is a truly special festival in one of the greatest cities!

@christinagiacona 's recent post was about one of our favorite things about recording classical music: the option, and often the necessity, to record wild, without a click track.

Every editing choice has to sound like a convincing musical decision: something a real musician or conductor might actually do.

That sounds simple enough, but it can get tricky very quickly.

When a classical ensemble is recorded together in the same room, every microphone is capturing the same performance at the same time.

In a multitracked recording, an individual instrument or vocal can be moved, tuned, stretched, or replaced in isolation. Most classical edits have to happen across all of the microphones at once.

We are essentially cutting from one complete performance to another.
And those performances are never identical.

The tempo will change. The ensemble balance will change. The voicing, tuning, timbre, phrasing, and energy will always be slightly different from one take to the next.

The goal is not to make those two performances mathematically identical.
The goal is to make the change between them sound like part of the interpretation.

A great edit doesn’t just hide the cut. It helps build a stronger musical interpretation than either take could provide on its own.

What an incredible week in Chile 🇨🇱 . From the endless silence of the Atacama desert to the explosion of color, drums, and devotion at Fiesta de La Tirana — this trip gave me a front-row seat to one of the most vibrant expressions of culture and faith I’ve ever witnessed. The diablada dancers, the brass bands, the Virgen del Carmen procession through the crowds — pure, unfiltered joy and tradition all at once.
Thank you to my friends for the incredible time together — for the laughs, the long drives, the shared meals, and for making this journey unforgettable. Chile🇨🇱, you gave us memories we’ll carry for a long time.
Now, it’s time to trade the desert dust for the podium — heading to Rio for the WASBE conference🇧🇷. Onward to more music. 🎺 #wearewieniawa #LaTirana #Chile #WASBE #Atacama

“blossoming and resonant hues…suspended in the surrounding brightness” by Jeffrey Mumford

An absolute pleasure to premiere Jeffrey’s cello concerto last week in Columbus with @codenewmusic and @cdwestovermaestro ! 🔥

It was an exciting experience to hear the fabulous @codenewmusic bring the orchestral score to life and to discover in real time how the drama of their lines and color interacted with the virtuosic, expressive cello “protagonist” as Jeffrey put it…

Thank you especially to @michaelrenetorres , Zoe and Jack from the @johnstonefund and Vice Provost from the Arts, Lisa Florman from @theohiostateuniversity for your belief in the arts and new music and bringing this project to life!
