💕

This children’s book project started while I was pregnant and slowly building the little one’s library. I thought he should grow up reading Cebuano stories too, not just English and German. He only has two Cebuano books, and it has become a personal quest of mine to multiply those books as much as possible.

I had so much fun writing these books because, beyond my admittedly selfish desire as a mother, I realized how little of the quintessential countryside culture I grew up with in the 80s and 90s has been preserved in the literature available to children today.

So this is my attempt to celebrate the trees, the birds, the ecological wisdom passed from one generation to the next and, yes, the little everyday objects that so many Filipinos grew up with.

And somehow, alongside these books about childhood, I am also returning to a book from my own younger years.

A second edition of my first poetry collection, Alang sa Nasaag, will be launched with the children’s books this November. The first edition came out more than a decade ago, shortly before I left the Philippines. A lot has happened since then. I left home, traveled exhaustively, lived in different countries, became an immigrant and eventually became a mother.

When I began revisiting the collection for this second edition, it felt incomplete to simply reprint the person I was before I left. There was a part of the story that had not yet happened when I first wrote it.

So this edition has a new and final section: Langyaw.

Langyaw means to move away – in this case, to move abroad - or to be a foreigner. It holds the poems that came after leaving and, in a way, brings the collection full circle.

It feels fitting that these three books (or four!) will arrive together: one looking back at the language and place I came from, and one trying to pass some of that world on to my child.

Privileged to be featured at @asiadesignprize that promotes and takes pride in Asian design and creativity. 🙏 This interview was enlightening to me, as I was able to reflect on where my creative practice and philisophy is at currently. It took me a while to reflect, write and articulate this because I wanted to try my best to express the excellence of the Filipino design craft. I'm grateful for being a Filipino designer in the Philippines, and that I get a chance to share a little bit about it from my perspective. I also realized throughout the process that I have gained more curiosity about Asian design, and its impact locally and globally today. What an exciting time for Philippine and Asian Design!

Appreciate @ockhams_branding for the generous and thoughtful interview process. I am grateful for the space and patience offered to me to be able to reflect and marinate on my thoughts about design and creativity. So glad that we connected! I'm proud of what I've shared because it took me some courage to share my heart. ❤️ This is also a good marker for me on where I'm at with my beliefs and dreams on creativity are lately.

The whole article is a lengthy read, but know that I appreciate you for reading whatever you can from here! Here are a few snippets from the interview. If you'd like to read the full article, the link is on my bio or at asiadesignprize.com/media .
