Inside the mind and closet of a centenarian New Yorker.

“Audrey Lou Sevin, born January 11, 1926, is exactly 75 years and 10 days older than I am. We met last fall, when I was charged with writing a book about her life to celebrate her 100th birthday.

The first time I rang the doorbell of her prewar Park Avenue apartment, a four-foot-something woman opened the door and met me with a discerning half-glance. Her bristly attitude endeared her to me immediately. Audrey was a woman with a story worth guarding.

As we walk through her five closets—one upholstered in a nostalgic floral ikat, two double-decker, one triple-decker, and one just for hats—I am immersed in an emporium of handmade, designer, and secondhand garments. When I ask how she sees herself reflected in the wardrobe, she pauses, struck by the absurd headiness of the question. ‘I am Audrey. I am me,’ she replies. If she loves it, she wears it. Identity, as Audrey knows, can’t be commodified.“

1 DAY!!!

Building The FlightPlan has been a labor of love. And it’s nowhere near done. The real work starts tomorrow as we’re committed to making this the most transformative experience for our students.

But even getting here has required more late nights, office weekends, and running through walls than anyone on social media will ever see.

But true friends see it. They see it when you leave early and they show their love not by guilting you, but expressing excitement that you even came. They see it in slow (or arguably terrible) text response time. They see it by looking at you in Find My Friends and realizing you’re always at the damn office.

And the real ones are just rooting for you, unconditionally. They’re not annoyed you’re less present. They’re proud of you for giving your life’s mission your all. They respect you for the grind. They forgive for not replying more slowly or having less free time than you’d like. And they’re your biggest hug when you’re down. And your biggest cheerleader when you have a win to share.

So last week when I decided to invite my favorite friends in SF to our office pre-launch, I can’t tell you how much it meant to me how they all showed up. It was so fun to demo our product to them. We spend all our time with Gen X parents and high schoolers, who we love, don’t get me wrong, but there’s nothing like hearing your friend admit: “this is way sicker than what I thought it would be.”

Tomorrow we launch. And the bravery it takes to put yourself out there every damn day, pour your all into building something that you’re gonna share with the world… that wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for these folks. 💛✈️
