There are two concepts that explain what happens when you practice a skill, walk away, and suddenly come back better:

The spacing effect and motor-skill consolidation.

The spacing effect is learning that improves when practice is spread out instead of crammed together.

Motor-skill consolidation is when the brain and nervous system continue organizing and strengthening a movement after you stop practicing it.

And in this case, I think motor-skill consolidation is the bigger piece.

In other words…

Sometimes you have to step away to move forward.

I saw this firsthand with my 7-year-old son, Titan.

He has only had five classes working on his front handspring. He’s been learning the pieces, trying it, missing it, trying again and slowly building the movement.

Then we stopped working on it for two weeks.

Today, at home, he decided to try it again.

He just went for it…

And did it.

Well…

Kind of. 😂

But that’s exactly what caught my attention.

He wasn’t being pushed to do it. Nobody was standing there saying, “Again. Again. Again.”

He had already given his brain and nervous system the information through those previous classes. Then he had two weeks away from it.

During that time, the nervous system can continue processing and organizing the movement. The strength, balance, timing, body position and coordination are all being connected.

Then you come back to it and suddenly the movement can feel different.

This is something I think parents and coaches should understand, especially with younger kids.

More isn’t always better.

You don’t have to pound a skill into a child every single day because they’re not getting it yet.

Give them good instruction. Give them opportunities to practice. Let them struggle. Let them make mistakes.

And sometimes…

Walk away.

Let the nervous system do some of the work.

Because sometimes the kid isn’t falling behind.

The kid is learning.

Now get back to class and fine-tune that damn thing.

Well… kind of. 😂

My buddies from the Martial arts and stunt world recommended @thetraviswong incredible gym, @jamovement where Titan trained with @cecilbe_

The progress he made in just 1 session took him years ahead

When I look back at my life, I realize some of the most important training I ever did happened when I was a kid.

I started gymnastics around 10 years old, then martial arts became another huge part of my foundation.

Gymnastics taught me how to control my body, balance, coordination, flexibility, falling, landing, rolling and understanding where my body was in space.

Martial arts taught me how to use that body under pressure, discipline, timing, confidence, awareness and how to protect myself.

I believe that foundation helped carry me through decades of competition, from football and judo to karate, bodybuilding and American Gladiators, and helped me come out the other side still moving, training and doing what I love.

Now I want to pass that foundation on to my son.

I’m not trying to create the ultimate warrior.

I’m trying to raise a young man who is capable.

Someone who knows his body.
Someone who can protect himself.
Someone who isn’t afraid to try something new.
Someone whose physical abilities open doors instead of closing them.

That’s why we’re up at JAM, going back to the basics and learning from the best.

I’m not preparing him for one sport.

I’m preparing him for life. 🥋⚔️🐺
