London. At Dance Umbrella’s Curating in Context conference. Who gets to move through the international arts ecology, and how? Who gets to belong ‘where’ in this ecosystem, and why? But I found myself becoming increasingly suspicious of the.. ‘where’. Where in Europe? Why even Europe? Cause who decided that Europe should be the final destination in the first place? Which brought us to the colonial histories of some established European institutions..

Perhaps curating is not only about opening existing doors to more people. It is also about recognising other routes, other resources and other centres of cultural gravity: Mozambique, Senegal, Ghana, Curaçao…?

😍 OB 70-LETNICI GRAFIČNEGA BIENALA LJUBLJANA SE SPOMINJAMO PRETEKLIH BIENALOV!

35. grafični bienale Ljubljana – Iz praznine so prišli darovi kozmosa (2023–2024) je pod umetniškim vodstvom Ibrahima Mahame, ganskega umetnika, ki se je letos kot prvi umetnik iz Afrike uvrstil na vrh lestvice najvplivnejših ljudi v svetu umetnosti po publikaciji ArtReview, s kuratorsko ekipo Patrick Nii Okanta Ankrah, Exit Frame Collective, Alicia Knock, Selom Koffi Kudjie, Inga Lāce in Beya Othmani raziskoval praznino kot prostor potenciala, solidarnosti in novih povezav. Dela 57 umetnikov (med njimi 33 z novimi naročenimi deli) so se razprostirala čez MGLC, Švicarijo, Cukrarno, PLAC, Krater, Kreativni laboratorij in Atelje SVS.
Iz praznine so prišli darovi kozmosa je ponudil razmislek o prepletenosti grajenih okolij, infrastrukture in materialov z modernimi zgodovinami protikolonialnega in protiimperialističnega boja, nacionalizma, internacionalizma in njihovih sodobnih odmevov. Veliko nagrado je prejela Tejswini Narayan Sonawane.

To be held and erased at the same time... Choreographer Christian Guerematchi, born from both Central-African and Slovene heritage, moves along the delicate thread between tenderness and suffocation.. recognizing our experiences where double consciousness shapes and the proximity to whiteness wounds, and forms.

Instead of opposing both lineages, he looks for the spiritual roots they share: animism, nature-based worldviews that once lived in Slovenia as fully as in Central Africa, before both places were forced into the West’s idea of “civilization.”

Tonight, in The Bookshop at ITA, Christian invites the ancestors to the room. And he asks... What happens when we truly recognize all the ghosts in our foundations?

OPENING @wienwoche
To generously remix the legacy of the late revolutionary Frantz Fanon, we as the global majority revolted in more than one way. Simply because, in the face of the unimaginable yet normalized violence of assaults, wars, genocides, systematic oppression, exploitation, extractivism, and the related ecological crisis, planet Earth had become unbreathable. Crying out the urgencies of the struggles for a world in which all living beings on the planet can breathe freely again, this year’s WIENWOCHE invited us to BREATHE AGAIN.
Moving between and with the levels of time, the opening event of BREATHE AGAIN, moderated by spoken word artist Njideka Iroh @nj_versifire, took over the space of the Prospekthof at the Academy of Fine Arts — a former royal imperial court theater scenery depot — in multifaceted ways.
The evening opened with the sonic, utopian, breath-mattering keynote of transdisciplinary artist Soñ Gweha aka SOÑXSEED @sonxseed Artists seized the space with the sound sculptures of the New Choir @newchoir.vienna under the artistic direction of Pavel Naydenov @pavel.naydenov and the distinctive sound performance of Ghostpoet @ghostpoet, who uniquely wove together alternative hip-hop, electronica, and indie rock.
Christian Guerematchi’s @cedar_gaze dance performance L2D unraveled complexities of the power dynamics of truth construction and double consciousness, while Crni Tito - Blaq Tito Addressing the Parliament of Ghosts echoed forgotten connections, struggles, and presents of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The evening ended with the captivatingly warm voice and bold storytelling presence of mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux @ladoucelette in collaboration with New Choir. Guests were then invited to a Collective Breath Walk with multidisciplinary artist, writer, and curator Njideka Iroh, moving from Prospekthof to the afterparty space, Celeste. We want to give big thanks to the organisers of the festival and the whole team behind it, for inviting us to be part of it! It was a bliss share this moment with the great artists involved and performing that night! Thanks to the audience for being there and supporting the event! @eSeLat #joannapianka
