What a ride! ✨🚂💨

Last week, the Downtown Huntsville BIA held our Annual General Meeting aboard the @muskokaheritageplace train to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished together over the past 12 months! 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for an awesome time of connection, community, and celebrating Downtown Huntsville! ❤️

Everyone who attended our AGM was entered into a draw to win their business a full-page ad in our official Girlfriends’ Getaway Weekend program!

Congratulations to Sarah at @greatvine.healthstore.muskoka on the big win! 👏🤣😍

We’re so thankful for everyone who keeps us on track and for having you all along for the ride! 🚂💨

But we’re not done yet… 😉 Downtown is about to get even MORE fun! 🎉✨

Stay tuned!👀

Obsessed with this weather. Please last EXTRA long this year 🍂😭 Like, why would I want to be sweating at a beach when I could be curled up under a blankie instead, Nessie at my feet?

Reading a fun staff pick from @cedarcanoebooks called Set Piece. It's outside my usual witchy reads, but I'm literally LOLing so far!👌

For an atmospheric witchy read, The Scottish Scrolls trilogy is being heavily binged by my shoppe customers all over town, and I couldn't be more grateful...thank you for supporting a local author and business owner. 🥲

Come with me to… @cedarcanoebooks! 🛶📚💜

One of my favourite bookstores because it feels so warm and cozy in here. You can tell the staff love reading because there are so many recommendations throughout the store. If you’re in Huntsville, come check them out!

★ Book Review ★
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
.
I can’t believe how long it took me to read this. It’s been recommended over and over, but I finally picked it up at @cedarcanoebooks , one of my fave indie bookshops in Muskoka, Canada.
.
As a botanist, Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer has been trained to ask questions of nature with the tools of science. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, she embraces the notion that plants and animals are our oldest teachers.
Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings—asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass—offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices.
.
Dr. Kimmerer - Robin, as she feels to me now - explains that all life survives thanks to reciprocity. We give, receive, and are grateful. Humans are only some of the citizens on turtle island, no more and no less than the sparrows, the minnows, the butterflies and the cedar trees. She argues (correctly) that humans have lost sight of their relationship with the natural world: our food sources are seen as grocery stores, not the plants and animals that we actually eat. That our houses are from construction sites, not the trees that gave their lives for our shelter.
It can be hard, sometimes, to remember, but an indigenous worldview might just save the planet.
.
I did both the print book and also the audiobook, and I’m so glad I did. Dr. Kimmerer is a wonderful narrator, her emotion and passion come through in her voice. I highly recommend the audiobook, even if this is a reread.
.
A wonderful, poignant reminder of how precious life is, and how much we take it for granted. A must read for anyone who has ever looked twice at a sunset, a majestic tree, or a wildflower.

I love a spooky story and learning about the spirits of the woods.

I just finished “Never Whistle at Night” on audiobook and have “Part II Back for Blood” on hold.

If you like a spooky tale with a history. “Never Whistle at Night” an indigenous horror anthology is a beautifully told tale of the spirits lurking just beyond the shadows.

Both books are available from @audible_ca or from your local library on @libby.app or in hardcopy at @cedarcanoebooks

What’s a trip up north without a stop (or two) at the bookstore ? 📖🧙🏻‍♀️ 🍂

If Freida writes it you know we’re going to read it 🤷🏻‍♀️

The perfect read for the season 🎃

Downstairs in the bookstore @cedarcanoebooks tucked away from the bustle of Main Street there’s a moody little corner at @affogatomuskoka waiting for you.

Come for a latte, stay for a few more chapters. 📚

What better time than end of September to post a bookstore adventure from the middle of June? 🫶🏼😂

When the roomies and I took a weekend to go up North to Muskoka we checked out @cedarcanoebooks . Located in Huntsville, Cedar Canoe Books has a wide selection of books for kids, teens, and adults, as well as fun accessories like tote bags and stickers. I’ll come back next time I’m in town!

Let me know in the poll what kinds of adventures you want to see more of! #shelftoshelfbooks #shelflife #bookstoreadventures #supportlocal
