Celebrating two whole decades of one of the most enchanting records of the aughts today.
Its arrangements, dense and resplendent in perfectly equal measure, just never fail to leave me feeling awestruck. Even with other daring bands in recent years like Squid being a part of Warp’s roster, this album still stands as one of the boldest releases that any artist or group has ever put out with them.

Happy Birthday, you beauty. Twenty years of Yellow House, the first full-on Grizzly Bear album, holy shit. I’ve never shied away from gushing over how important this group’s music has been to me, and I found my way there through Yellow House. If the followup Veckatimest was the soundtrack to my love story, this one was there for me in a time of tumult. Life can be tragic, but there is also this. Though the adhesive holding the inner sleeves together has vanished, the otherworldly thrills in the grooves remain. Thank you, as always, Ed, Daniel, Chris, and Christopher.

Wow. I’m honestly astounded it’s been 20 years since Yellow House came out. I cannot thank you all enough for the support you’ve shown us and this album. It’s been such a fun one to perform live and reimagine as the years go on. I’m truly so so grateful for this album because it was the first one of us a proper band, with actual recognition so we could stop playing rooms of 15 people and graduate to a couple hundred! What an honor it’s been! Thanks to my band mates and mostly all of you for your continued support. Surreal! This album can vote! No martinis for it yet 😂😂😂 ❤️❤️❤️ Let me know how you discovered it or a favorite memory of it in comments. I love hearing people’s stories :)

Technically ‘Yellow House,’ released 20 years ago today in the US, is the second Grizzly Bear full-length. But 2004’s ‘Horn Of Plenty’ was essentially an Ed Droste solo joint, and its lo-fi recordings might as well be demos compared to the sounds he and bandmates Daniel Rossen, Chris Taylor, and Christopher Bear conjured together.

The splendor and sophistication of these tracks heralded a new era for indie music: rooted in classic pop, rock, and folk but tied to the avant-garde; hashed out in rock clubs but fit for conservatories; spacious and ghostly yet utterly visceral at times.

It helped to define its moment, yet two decades later, ‘Yellow House’ feels timeless. Check out our 20th anniversary essay on the album at stereogum.com.

Grizzly Bear have never reissued the Friend EP, originally released in 2007 as a bridge between Yellow House and Veckatimest, my favorite album by anyone ever. As with all white whales, I convinced myself I’d find a copy in the wild. Well, that never happened, but here it is, on my shelf, on my turntable, and in my heart, thanks to an equitable trade with my friend Andrew. Thanks, Andrew!

It’s a unique release in the Grizzly Bear canon, compiling non-album tracks, alternate versions, home recordings, covers, and other assorted goods. The Grizzly Bear stuff is wonderful, but your mileage may vary with covers of Yellow-era Grizzly Bear songs by other artists. CSS and Atlas Sound each tackle “Knife” in their own inimitable ways, and Band of Horses do the same with “Plans,” a banjo-and-stacked-vocals and somehow not an audibly blown jug rendition I quite enjoy. In fact, I like all three covers, which is convenient given they’re sandwiched between “Granny Diner” and “Deep Blue Sea” on the B side.

Looking at the cover a day after getting a haircut, and I remember when I’m not in a Malkmus mood, I always hope I’ll come out of the chair with it looking like Ed Droste or Christopher Bear’s hair, and it’s always too short. But check in with me a month from now, and I’ll be right as rain.

Here is a very non- perfect video mash up I made from the two Grizzly Bear @grizzlybear concerts @thedorkieyorkie and I attended at @saltshedchicago in Chicago last November. The fist day was cold almost freezing rain and the second night was windy snow but they were both fantastic shows! This is “Three Rings”. When I took these videos and photos I didn’t intend to make this or I would have just recorded the whole song, that is why there is a minute or so of the album version of the song overlaid with photos.
