The ultimate dad wagon has performed its duties flawlessly:

✅ Hauling @raisedxsharks and @shonka + camera gear for a commercial shoot
✅ Cruising @celesteofthewest out on date nights
✅ Putting smiles on the kid’s faces (their photos stay off the gram)

Next up: a bunch of scheduled maintenance, which the neighbors love me doing in the driveway. These old cars can be a joy to drive if you can do this stuff yourself.

For a few months I fixated on finding a sportish car. I’ve pretty much always had some type of fun car, but had sold them all, trying to just be an adult and drive my truck… that never lasts long.

After looking at Datsun Z cars, 911’s, Camaros, and a laundry list of others, I decided on a very challenging car to find. A 1991 318is, or as many know it, the “poor man’s m3.” The car was only made for one year and the holy grail was the “Slicktop” or non-sunroof car.

@celesteofthewest and I found this one on Craigslist in Florida and promptly headed south for the weekend. The seller stated that it ran, but not well, had old tires tires on it, and probably should be towed. Great, we’ll tow it home… but for the weekend let’s get it running and rip (slowly) around St. Augustine.

Our first hard left turn and @celesteofthewest almost ejected when her door flew open. We headed to @autozone where we grabbed a battery, MAF cleaner, and fuel cleaner. Using the tools I brought, the supplies from Autozone, and some zip ties we got the door fixed, got it running smoothly that night, and had a fun couple dates cruising it around Florida.

Once we got it home it became pretty apparent that it would need some work and some paint to really pop.

We had the body sanded down to bare metal, 3 stage’d with PPG in the original brilliantrot red. We swapped the torn vinyl seats for OEM BMW E30 leather seats, put a new fuel pump in, changed all the fluids, put new brake lines in, and got it running really nicely.

We cruised it for a while, then sent it on to the next owner.
