Issue 10: KALLIFORNICATION is available to pre-order on our website! Link in Bio!!!

The Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ critique of capitalist and twisted celebrity culture turned instant-classic at the turn of the 21st century inspired us to theme this issue and ask artists and writers to share their perspectives on the cali life. We compiled the best gritty, nature-ridden, and heartbroken pieces for you to discover why this a truly special place worth fighting for even when the odds are stacked against us.

Coincidentally, “Kalli” means home in the nahuatl tongue and this pocket of the world is the place we all call home.

Kallifornication includes work by 15 artists and writers, featuring: Pam Concepcion, Mylo Lam, Benni Q, Daryl Gussin, Janell Turley, William Ramirez, Ghada Morad, Jesus Cortez, Iz Evan, Rhiannon Cielos Chavez, Duncan Cuervo, Mateo Perez Lara, Sergio Brito, Julian Vargas, and Ryan Madariaga.

The start of a book. Hands and an open mic. Friends and new faces and threads and scribbles and empty chairs and thin lines. And no trees yet for some reason, but I've been noting some really beautiful trees.

Join us in wishing a happy birthday to our Bookstore & Programs Assistant, Genesis Perez! @panicversuseuphoria If you’ve been to our bookstore, attended any of our programs or workshops, you’ve encountered the kindest book-loving Pisces! ♓️ 📚 When they’re not rotating the shelves supporting LA’s authors and beyond, they’re making zines, being a goth king in the 805 and spinning Halsey records—ask them about their favorite songs, they’ll love it.

We celebrated at Lula Cocina Mexicana where we turned into calaveras after la cena and can’t wait to go back! Happy birthday Gena! We love you 💜

I FINALLY went to the Smell last week! It’s one of those venues people have been telling me I have to check out for years, but I finally made it and came out (mostly) in tact. Never wearing Vans to a show again…

Ryan and I saw American Idiot the day after the election. Let me tell you that was an EXPERIENCE. Huge huge huge shout out to the cast and crew of Deaf West’s American Idiot telling a story we desperately need right now. If you get a chance to see this show PLEASE DO. It is beautiful, cathartic, and inspiring. Congrats to our friend Lark for absolutely devouring this role!

Now back to the rage and tragedy…
