✨Why I don’t go to work alone (except specific places) ✨

🙅‍♀️ Controversial take but if you’re a performer, especially a woman, you should not go alone to your gigs!

Of course as a young artist, I use to go everywhere by myself, do my rigging, my safety , etc… because that’s the norm right?
But is it?
In every sport or other artistic performances, there’s always a coach, a manager, someone dedicated to the artist safety and well being and to ensure the performance goes smoothly.

👇 So here is why I always bring my assistant with me to my gigs

1) my job is high risk and I need someone to ensure my safety during my performance: fire (fire safety), aerial (someone to ensure no one interferes with the equipment). How many times did I set up my lollipop then went to prepare only to come back to strangers playing on it? My assistant makes sure no one touches my equipment (and yes I had venues assuring me the security staff would be watching but they didn’t)

2) It helps me focus on my performance and not stress over logistics. My assistant talks to techs, managers, engineers, etc… and solves all the tiny issues that arise during a contract.
I am in control of the gig but he’s the one passing on my instructions

3) I am a woman and most of my gigs are late at night. Going alone to an unknown club at 3am is a no no for me. Safety first.

4) my assistant @zak_salinger knows me, my rigging, my shows and every single details of my performances. He knows what I need, all my personal requirements and is professionally trained.

🙏 There are still a few places where I go alone such as restaurants I know very well and day events where I only have to perform ambient dancing.

💫 Travelling to perform is why I keep falling in love with this job 💫

Last year I was in Hurghada, Egypt and had the pleasure to perform both aerial and oriental dance for luxury resorts, lounges, restaurants and parties!
Excited to be back this summer ✨

The audience was so supportive and uplifting, the cast absolutely incredible and of course the host @phyllishullofficially marvellous 🤩

Thanks again for having me, what a beautiful evening!
It’s great to be part of meaningful shows that promote inclusivity and diversity and provide a stage (literally) to queer artists 🌈 representation matters!

1. I don’t do overly complicated tricks during my performances.
Most people can’t tell what’s hard and what’s not.
As I have to perform several times a day, I need to choose tricks I can repeatedly do without the risk of an injury that would put me out of work. And the routine needs to be sustainable for my body.
Splits will always be a crowd favourite and I prefer to focus on musicality and flow. Yes I can do a fonji but I have no desire to include it in my regular work

2. There are some tricks that I’ll never be able to do again and I’m okay with it. I’ve moved to a different repertoire of tricks that showcase my strength and flexibility

3. There are some tricks I have no interest to learn because I don’t think they look good ( this one is from @movewithtara and I couldn’t agree more!) I think teddys are awful and iguana is overrated

4. I don’t train pole every day. 6 years ago, I would have been at the studio every day, training like crazy. Now I prefer to pole only 2 to 3 times a week to cross train other disciplines and give my body a rest.

5. I only compete once a year maximum.
Competition use to be a big part of my pole journey but I don’t wish to put myself to the stress of comp prep while working as a performer. Sometimes you have to choose

6. I use a lot of different grips and I prefer powder coated or silicone poles. In Egypt, I include cleaning time during my act because it’s impossible to pole by 35°C without sweating. And no more 50mm brass pole, I want what’s best for my performances
