Just one more week to see the work of our artist in residence Céline Hurka. She is a type designer based in the Hague.

Come and visit the closing weekend 24 & 25 October, meet Céline. On Sunday October 25 there is a presentation by Céline and @laura___snijders of the final work.

In her work, Hurka explores a remarkable parallel: while plant species disappear due to climate change, floral and plant motifs have also vanished from contempotary typography and book design. Letters become more than mere characters—they become an archive of what we risk losing.

Is there a future in type?

The type industry is changing fast. Between consolidation, shifts in distribution, open-source libraries, AI, and the pressures of an increasingly crowded marketplace, running a sustainable practice has become much harder. For many emerging designers, the question is no longer how to draw better letters, but how to create the conditions that allow their work to reach an audience.

Across the series, we’ll be asking bigger questions about where type is headed, who gets to shape it, and what emerging designers need to build practices that can last.

Op vrijdag 25 september zeefdrukken Laura Snijders, technisch adviseur van de Grafische Werkplaats, en typograaf en kunstenaar Céline Hurka in De Helena cadeaupapier. Bezoekers zijn van harte uitgenodigd mee te helpen.
De avond is onderdeel van Célines residentie ‘Een nieuwe natuur’, te zien in Rijksmuseum Meermanno t/m 25 oktober. Deel twee volgt op Museumnacht, 10 oktober a.s.
De Helena, Helena van Doeverenplantsoen 3, 19:00–23:00 uur, vrij entree.

On Friday, September 25th, Laura Snijders—technical advisor at the Grafische Werkplaats—and typographer and artist Céline Hurka will be screen-printing gift wrap at De Helena. Visitors are warmly invited to join in.
The evening is part of Céline’s residency, ‘Een nieuwe natuur’ (A New Nature), on display at Rijksmuseum Meermanno until October 25. Part two will follow on Museum Night, October 10th!

We’re so excited to share the speakers for our Fall 2026 Virtual Lecture Series.

This semesters’ theme asks: What does it take to shape the future of type? 💬

The type industry is changing fast. Between consolidation, shifts in distribution, open-source libraries, AI, and the pressures of an increasingly crowded marketplace, running a sustainable practice has become much harder. For many emerging designers, the question is no longer how to draw better letters, but how to create the conditions that allow their work to reach an audience.

Each talk will last approximately 30-45 minutes, followed by a brief Q&A session. Recordings will be made available on our website at a later date.

📍 Lectures will be held live over Zoom.

Ten designers. One grid tool. Ten completely different typefaces.

GridType Vol. 1: Type & Tools just dropped from Slanted Publishers, and it does something most type books skip entirely: it shows you the tool, not just the finished fonts.

The tool itself, grid-type.com, is inspired by the Plaque Découpée Universelle, a 19th-century stencil that let you draw every letter of the alphabet from one shared structure. Nine grid types, endless parameters, and ten designers pushing the same system in ten different directions. Anna Cairns, Charlotte Rohde, Hanna Boslau, Studio HanLi, fanfare, and more, each one landing somewhere completely different.

96 pages, risograph printed, open thread-stitching, edited by Katharina Nejdl. All ten typefaces are free to download at grid-type.com.

GridType Vol. 1 explores the relationship between type design and the tools that shape it.
