Here’s what’s actually happening inside a hyperbaric chamber.

Normally, oxygen travels through your body attached to red blood cells. That system is already around 97-99% full, so breathing more oxygen at normal pressure doesn’t change much.

Add pressure and the game changes. At 1.5 atmospheres or more, oxygen dissolves directly into your blood plasma, the fluid your red cells float in. Plasma can reach places red blood cells struggle to get to, like swollen or damaged tissue. Oxygen levels in your plasma can rise up to 10-15 times higher than normal.

Here’s what that does at a cellular level:

Your mitochondria get more fuel to produce ATP, the energy every cell runs on, including the ones repairing damage.

Your body releases stem cells from bone marrow. One study showed circulating stem cells increased around eightfold after a course of 20 sessions.

The repeated rise and fall in oxygen triggers new blood vessel growth, improving supply to tissue long after you leave the chamber.

Collagen production increases, which is key for rebuilding tendons, ligaments and bone.

Inflammatory signalling drops and swelling reduces.

Most people go their whole lives breathing about 21% oxygen, because that’s simply what’s in the air around us. Step into our mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT) chamber, and you’re breathing 96%.

Here’s why that matters.

Inside the chamber, you’re under pressure — and that pressure changes how oxygen moves through your body. Instead of oxygen just attaching to red blood cells like normal, the increased pressure forces a lot more of it to dissolve directly into your plasma, the liquid part of your blood. That means oxygen can reach places red blood cells sometimes struggle to get to efficiently — including tissue that may have been low in oxygen (what’s called hypoxic tissue) for a long time.

Why does that matter for your health? Oxygen is fuel for your mitochondria, the part of your cells responsible for producing energy. More oxygen reaching your cells means more energy available for them to do their job properly. And when your cells have more energy, the organs and tissues they make up can function at a higher level — which can show up as better recovery, clearer thinking, improved sleep, and just generally feeling more “switched on.”

None of this happens by accident. Our chamber is built from reinforced steel and weighs around a tonne, engineered to safely hold the pressure required to make all of this possible. The condenser inside is what generates that 96% oxygen and feeds it through to the mask you breathe from during your session.

We’re introducing something new at Tolman —
and it represents a significant step forward in how we support healing during fasting.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is now available.

This is a technology that allows us to directly influence one of the most overlooked drivers of chronic disease & slowed recovery: cellular oxygen availability.

Most hyperbaric chambers currently offered sit around 1.3–1.7 ATA.

While beneficial, this level of pressure primarily enhances oxygen delivery through haemoglobin — which has limits.

Our system operates at 2.0 ATA, the point at which hyperbaric therapy transitions into medical-grade application.
At this pressure, oxygen dissolves directly into the plasma in significant amounts, allowing it to reach tissues that are typically difficult to oxygenate — areas affected by inflammation, poor circulation, or metabolic dysfunction.

This drives meaningful physiological change:
• increased mitochondrial function & ATP production
• reduced inflammation & improved tissue repair
• enhanced circulation & angiogenesis
• support for neurological recovery

During fasting, the body is already shifting into repair: insulin drops, autophagy increases, inflammation lowers, and damaged cells are cleared.

But these processes are oxygen-dependent. By increasing oxygen availability during a fast, you enhance the body’s ability to repair, detoxify, and regenerate at a cellular level — creating an internal environment that is low in glucose, low in inflammation, and high in oxygen.

This aligns with the work of Otto Warburg, who identified low-oxygen environments as a driver of dysfunctional cell metabolism.

When oxygen is restored, the terrain shifts.

Pressure matters.
Lower-pressure systems do not achieve the same level of oxygen diffusion into plasma — limiting their depth of effect. At 2.0 ATA, we reach a level where true therapeutic impact occurs.

Last weekend in Warburton we created that space. A space for men to be vulnerable. To ask for help, we showed up alone, left as brothers.

Creating a bond through sharing the load. No man has to go through it alone, by being courageous and putting yourself out there and asking for help, you find guys going through a similar struggle, but are willing to lend a hand and help you when you need it most.
