For four days, Devonshire Collective and friends’ Pop-up Potting Shed becomes a place to gather, make, listen and imagine. We will be out and about with our mobile structure, from the beach to the street. We’re inviting the people who live, work, pass through and spend time in Devonshire Ward to help shape the future of its gardens and green spaces.

We want to hear what matters to you, as we embark on finding places, spaces and stories to plot new areas to grow plants, in shared co-created gardens in our future.

Great examples of strenthening communities in Hackney and beyond through promoting startups such as those in The Loop via peppercorn rents and meanwhile use - ideas for the new Local Plan?

Earlier this month, Dezeen’s architecture reporter Amy Peacock (@amy.peacock) caught up with architectural designer Alys Hargreaves from Cella Collective (@cellacollective) at Houghton Festival (@houghtonfestival).

Cella Collective, in collaboration with Mitre & Mondays (@mitreandmondays), unveiled a new monumental timber-and-thatch pavilion on the festival grounds. The structure was informed by Houghton Hall’s historic 1772 water tower and was constructed using sustainably harvested reed from Scottish RSPB reedbeds, highlighting how regenerative design can support biodiversity and traditional craft.

Peacock and Hargreaves also discuss why materiality matters, how design plays a part in the festival experience, and other must-see installations at this year’s Houghton Festival such as wooden thrones by Call Super (@call_super).

@Houghtonfestival raises the bar every year. Brilliant team and crew are at the heart of it, the care and attention to detail is second to none. Each year there is a sense that they are tweaking and adding to enhance the experience. Loved the thatched water tower installation by @cellacollective and @mitreandmondays & the growing programme of talks, live performances and wellness. @giant___steps on Friday afternoon was a glorious sweat box, and #stallions on Saturday and Sunday was a dusty riot. Huge fun, lovely people, beautiful location.

Great to see these #pojabi #bojagi inspired panels made by Yodomo up @morrisand.company

The two curtains began as an experiment at Yodomo, exploring how to reuse surplus sheer sample materials from the interior design industry. The first curtain section was created from one @kvadrattextiles ‘daybreak’ sample hanger, revealing the potential of these overlooked materials. Interest from Yodomo’s local reuse community led to a series of workshops held over 18 months (2023–2025) at The Textile Reuse Hub. 65 participants learned the technique and created their own pieces to take home.

This work became a ‘mother bojagi,’ gradually expanded over time by reusing waste fabrics from @kvadrattextiles @eastlondoncloth @romo_fabrics @johnlewis a collective textile shaped through shared making, material reuse and evolving community practice.

The exhibition curated by @cellacollective features work and projects from circular businesses including @yodomo.co who were at The Loop @wickcdt

Another 5 unexplainable weeks of building more than a festival. A temporary world that always reminds me to slow down, and hold both the joy and the fragility of life closer. I feel reminded of who I am. I am grateful I get to witness and be part of the care that gets poured into each detail of the festival.

Left with a full heart and my soul family, who I’ll carry with me long after the structures are gone. Thank you community. 🪽

Houghton are pleased to announce its first art & design commission of 2026. The work entitled ‘The Water Tower’ is a collaboration between Cella Collective (@cellacollective) and Mitre & Mondays (@mitreandmondays), shaped by a shared interest in materials, ecology and landscape systems.

A new structure built from timber and thatch, The Water Tower creates a dialogue between Norfolk’s watery broads, intertidal reedbeds and the tradition of thatching that has grown from this landscape. Closer to the site, the structure references the water tower, built in 1772 to service Houghton Hall, the first of its kind in the region.

Thatched in material harvested from RSPB reedbeds, the Water Tower finds use for material cut for habitat management. In doing so, it recentres the need for regenerative homegrown construction materials, that, when effectively managed, supports birdlife and the health of our waterways.

What was once a habitat for Bearded Tits, Marsh Harrier and Water Rale will soon welcome you at the site’s Eastern edge.

Proud to share that Clay | Culture | Carbon, the exhibition I developed with Morris+Company last year, has been shortlisted for Communication Initiative of the Year at AJ100 2026.

The initiative grew out of emerging in-house research and brought together themes of sustainability, community and craft, exploring clay not just as a material, but as a lens through which architecture might become more regenerative, participatory and ecologically aware.

The centrepiece was a three-part installation displaying clay tiles made by students from The City Academy, Hackney, designed and built by CELLA and supported by UCL East’s Community Engagement Fund, shining a light on the carbon impact of material choices and the power of collective making.

Additional displays drew together experimental low carbon brick prototypes using reclaimed aggregates and living tiles; archival footage of traditional London brick making; a ceramicist’s experiments with locally foraged clay; and a creative writer’s reflections on her mother’s clay artworks. Together, these elements helped situate research within material practice, memory and lived experience.

This was a deeply collaborative project which sparked dialogue across public and professional spheres and I’m hugely grateful to everyone who contributed to and engaged with it along the way.
