Everyday stories are the most beautiful ones. A little girl buying corn with her mother, the golden sunset fading into city lights, life moving all around… simple moments, endless beauty.

On February 1st, Saint Brigid’s day and the Celtic tradition of Imbolc is celebrated in Ireland. Imbolc derives from Imbolg meaning ‘in the belly’ and is symbolic of lambing, lactation of sheep and the ongoing continuity of life. Imbolc is the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox. It symbolises the return of growth, light, rebirth and spring. Unlike any other Celtic Festivals, Imbolg is unique in having significance in both Pagan and Christian times with Brigid. Brigid gifted them a new vision for future prosperous times heralding the warmer, bright days. The Celts celebrated Brigid by making a doll of the Goddess from oat or wheat straw. They would make a dress for the doll and put it in a basket with a white flower bedding. Young girls would carry the dolls door to door, and gifts are given from each household. In addition, on the day of Imbolc, people lit bonfires and held a feast to honour Brigid. #saintbrigid #láféilebríde #imbolc #imbolg #irishwomenshistory #herstory #celtichistoryandmythology #celticgoddess

Today in #Galicia, Spain as many other Celtic culture we celebrate the Samaín not Halloween. The Samain is the most important festival of Celtic origin of the pagan period in Europe until its conversion to Christianity, in which the night of October 31 to November 1 served as a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Celtic culture & it was regarded as the "Celtic New Year", which began with the dark season. It is both a transition party (the passage from one year to another) and an opening to the other world. Its etymology is Gaelic and means 'end of summer'.
Keep our culture alive by celebrating the real history behind these dates. #keephistoryalive #celticculrure #ancestors #Samain

This is the base of a 9th C Celtic Cross in the grounds of St Bees Priory, a remnant of the old church which stood here in the Dark Ages. I really had no idea this cross was here, I have passed this so many times! I was just walking around the grounds, enjoying the calm and history of the place when I happened to notice this stone standing alone, covered in moss. I got closer and noticed the markings which I recognised as Celtic. When I hit home, I did some research and discovered that it was a 9th C Celtic Cross base. I am so happy I’ve discovered this, another reason to love the Priory. #celtic #celticcross #ancient #oldchurch #oldchurches #9thcentury #darkages #middleages #medieval #medievalarchitecture #medievalhistory #medievalchurch #medievalworld
