The photo of Elaine Gardner in “Job”—by choreographer Marcus Schulkind, who was in the Graham Company and had his own company in NYC and Boston.

The workshop will explore movement and some of the classic forms Martha Graham used to create her choreographic legacy. It is a movement class that offers an exploration of the contraction, spirals of the torso and architectural poses used in Graham technique and choreography. We honor her legacy by experiencing and viewing some of her iconic phrases and dance pieces. Open to all levels.

This event is a part of a NYStateDanceForce Project. A performance will be on September 18 at Torn Space Theater.

This event correlates with the centennial celebration of the Martha Graham Dance Company.

☀️A series Series for actors and dancers! If you are like us you want day class options in Buffalo - like there are in NYC or Large cities. Here is a series to bite into.

Gerry Trentham’s (he/they) life-long dedication to the art of performance has directed the company he founded pounds per square inch performance through three decades of production, created and presented over 50 original works for stage and screen, garnered international performance acclaim and film awards, numerous Toronto Dora awards/nominations and invited international directing, producing, choreographic, teaching and mentoring opportunities on four continents including within major performance training institutions across Turtle Island. Their MFA and Voice Teaching Diploma from York University lead to a faculty/producer role at the acclaimed Canada’s National Voice Intensive (now the Moving Voice Institute), with Denise Fujiwara in creating Butoh/Voice and with Diane Roberts and her Arrivals Legacy Voice practice. Originating roles in their own creation as well as multiple creations with renowned choreographers Serge Bennathan’s, Claudia Moore, as cast/voice director in Denise Fujiwara’s hit EUNOIA, in recent works of Tedd Robinson and Zab Maboungou) has sustained a performance career still fluid into a fifth decade.

Class Description:
Text and Dance Composition with Gerry Trentham is a 4-week series exploring the intersection of voice, movement, and storytelling. Through improvisation, gesture, and compositional tools, participants will develop and refine an original solo work; one that is entirely their own. Whether you come as a dancer or actor, you’ll be challenged to work on your strengths while being pushed towards the tools that feel less familiar. By the end of the series, you’ll leave with a complete solo.

Afro Caribbean dance:

All forms of Afro-Caribbean dance have their roots in Africa, from the 15th to 18th century these dances survived when brought across the Atlantic Ocean to North and South America. The African explanation tells us the movements signify multiple things like tribal liberation, coming of age, storytelling and more. These dances have change since it’s voyage overseas and the meaning of the dances now became about the experience of the people in the lands they now call home, one thing they have in common was the slave trade, so many of the earlier forms of these dances reflected that experience. These new forms of dance still have strong African roots in Brazil, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Cuba were Yoruba-speaking people from southwest Nigeria and so many more islands in the Caribbean and beyond.

This class unites dance, rhythm, and song. It creates an environment and dance community that nurtures, heals, renews, and inspires the body and spirit.

These dances are often polyrhythmic, which means dancers move to multiple competing rhythms in the music. The dances are sometimes polycentric, moving various parts of the body at the same time, reflecting elements of body isolation where the dance at a point focuses on one body part to move fluently. There is an emphasis on hip rolling and hip swinging, which come from African customs (from dance ceremonies in places like the Congo, Angola, the former Zaire and so many more).

For main styles you will be learning:

Pique – The more earthy dance of the Bele Family.

Simple Bele – Expresses the gracefulness of the dancer.

Creole Bele – Characterized by subtle movements of the hips.

Calypso – Originally was the “Bamboula” or the “Chica” of the 1880’s, while today it is referred to as “Jump Dancing” during Carnival celebration.

Last Friday’s Scoliosis Class was such a bright spot in the studio. 💛

Having @florenenancy Nancy with us is always such a treat, she brings this calm, knowledgeable presence that instantly makes everyone feel supported and seen. Her ability to help people understand their bodies in a new way is honestly kind of magical.

And to everyone who came back to continue learning with her… we just love seeing that. Watching you dig deeper, get curious, and grow each time is one of our favorite parts of what we do.

Can’t wait to have Nancy back in the studio again. 🧡

Dec. 16 Dance Class! 12:30-2:00

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
The Dunham technique consists of a series of codified modern dance movement patterns and progressions. Its roots in African and Caribbean dances and rhythms also draw from classical ballet, creating a cultural link between Africa and North America. This dance vocabulary emphasizes the isolation of individual body parts and prepares dancers for executing poly-movement structures that reflect African cultural influences. The technique is based on primitive rhythms that logically flow into movement combinations and choreography. Dunham serves as a tool to train both amateur and professional dancers, fostering a deeper understanding of culture.
