Ukrainian film, Chicago steel.

A roll of Svema 400 from Central Camera, a Chicago institution since 1899, and the old truss over N Paulina throwing its shadow straight down the alley.

Anyone else shooting Svema? How do you rate it?

I’m talking to the regulars at classic Chicago spots!

Pat has been going to Central Camera downtown for more than 30 years.

His love of photography reminds me to appreciate the little things.

Summer in Chicago, shot on my husband’s grandpa’s 1973 Kodak Pocket Instamatic across a few different rolls of 110 film. If you and a friend have been talking about getting into film, this is the low-stakes way in, since the cameras go for under $20 on eBay and Central Camera on Wabash sells and develops the film. Just know the developing took about two months, so start a roll now and you’ll have your fall back sometime in December.

My new workplace is right next to Central Camera, Chicago’s oldest camera store on Wabash. It’s been running for a couple of generations now since its opening in 1899.

Have you seen the new “old” @chicagocta sign at the updated Racine stop? @blockclubchi covered the story, “This is the first time we’ve replicated a backlit, more elaborate sign like this,” Chicago Transit Authority General Manager Graham Garfield said. “It gives the station a unique look and feel that people will recognize and take ownership of.”

This got us curious about what the train system looked like at the time. In addition to the elevated trains, at one time Chicago did claim to have the largest streetcar system in the world, with a fleet of over 3,200 passenger cars and over 1,000 miles of track. They were called “Chicago Surface Lines” and in the 1910s it would cost only nickel to ride. The advent of affordable automobiles in the 1920s caused streetcar ridership to decline – but streetcar operators pressed on and Chicago would go on to test two experimental designs in the 1940s. They were nicknamed Green Hornet streetcars because of their speed and the Chicago Surface Lines’ green paint job. Sounds nice!

We applaud the use of vintage design in this playful form of public placemaking. At this point the design would have been made to encourage ridership through the use of bright colors and bold letters, before later becoming much more uniform. The @illinoisrailwaymuseum has an amazing collection of signs that show this design progression, if you’re interested in learning more! We would encourage more people to look at signs through a similar lens, as a marker of place and a sense of pride. Although of course we wish it were real neon (🤓) and believe it would’ve been a great opportunity for any local neon bender to showcase the vibrancy of neon. We’re thrilled that the CTA paid homage to Chicago’s iconic sign history in this remodeling project. Let us know what you think about the sign in the comments!

Today’s the last day to see @midwestlargeformatasylum “The Big Picture” at the @chicagoculturalcenter

It’s been a fun thing to be involved with. Got a big robot tintype (16x20) in the show. Got to make tintypes live on @wgnmorningnews with fast friend and colleague @tintypist_nelson and explore @centralcameraco and a “Vintage Photo” vendor downtown. Also got to stop into other @filterphoto events, running into an old friend from Dallas @prismafilmlab

In the end community was really the big picture. A chance to feel alive in a shared experience with like minded folk. Love to everyone, and to this city.
