POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

NYJA is a founding member of the New York Jewish Coalition for Criminal Justice Reform. Today, our ED Phylisa was at Rikers with coalition co-chair Rabbi Hilly Haber of @centralsynagogue and coalition staff from @jcrcny for the launch of a special, hot-off-the-press siddur for use on Rikers island.

The siddur - prayer book - is infused with poetry and prose by justice leaders and people who have been in custody on Rikers. It’s a beautiful offering that will help the population who wants to attend Jewish services to do so with matching prayer books that speak to their lived experiences.

If you’re interested in joining the coalition for worship services or celebrations with people in custody on Rikers Island, email us at info@nyja.org!

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW: And Now, My Own Loss and Grief

She spends her professional life elevating conversations about death and loss — including as host of this podcast series. But when her own mother — Eileen — died in February, @stephanieagarry was thrust into the journey of mourning and grief herself, gaining new and greater perspective through the lens of her own family.

In this special episode of @exit.strategy.podcast, Stephanie gives her host microphone to rabbibuchdahl of Central Synagogue in New York. Together, they reveal the truisms of Jewish ritual and community, the necessity of self-awareness, and the inevitability of generational succession … at once personal and universal.

"The aesthetic I tried to achieve was a lot of opposite forces: classic but touches of modern, East Coast traditional but with Korean flair, clean architectural lines but still have soft elements.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love the weddings where everyone really lets loose and dances hard to the point the details aren't what matter the most. ..We want to honor the Jewish-Korean heritage but ultimately, we want things to be upbeat and not too austere. .." #nailedit

"I feel so grateful to return to the The Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives to spend time researching. This is a gem of the Reform movement. Scholars from around the world come here - THE destination for American Jewish History." - Rabbi Ari Lorge.

This week Rabbi Lorge is in our reading room researching for an upcoming book collaboration with Rabbi Jordan Helfman that will highlight Early American Liberal Reform Sermons.

While researching Lorge has looked at a myriad of collections including Julian Morgenstern (MS-30), Ray Frank (Nearprint), Hannah G. Solomon (MS-749), Louise Mannheimer (MS-295), and more.

Both Rabbi Lorge and Rabbi Helfman are graduates of @hucjir. Rabbi Lorge serves @centralsynagogue in New York City, NY and Rabbi Helfman serves South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue in London, England.

My talk with @centralsynagogue is coming up in less than a month! “Catskills Style: Summer Fashion and the American Dream” explores the important yet overlooked role of fashion in the Catskills resort industry, and how style helped foster a sense of freedom and community for New York City Jews. This event comes at the culmination of extensive research for my master’s thesis at the Fashion Institute of Technology, The State University of New York (to be published soon!). I hope to see you on August 14th at 7:30 PM via Zoom or Facebook Live.

Reflecting on an extraordinary month since Building Together's Gala!

We were immensely blessed to have had incredible speakers like Rabbi Buchdahl from @centralsynagogue, whose words resonated deeply in our hearts.

Also pictured is Rabbi Rebecca Keren Eisenstadt and Gala Co-Chair/Board Member Michael Bretholz, both of whom have contributed incredible passion, dedication, and outstanding work for this organization, propelling the events success and Building Together’s mission of unity.
