Non un museo, ma un centro dove l’arte si intreccia con la vita. #CentroPecci

$We are happy to share three upcoming events with Steve Turtell and Portraits and Places, on the occasion of his visit to Europe this fall. The first takes place on October 29, 2026, at @climaxbooks in London, where Turtell will be in conversation with writer John Douglas Millar. On November 6 the book arrives at @centropecci in Prato for a reading with the artist Giulia Crispiani during the Centro Pecci Books Festival, and on November 25 Turtell and Crispiani meet again at @leporello.books in Rome. Each evening brings together readings and conversation on memory, friendship and independent publishing as a space where fragile histories can become or remain visible. Portraits and Places offers six intimate, personal views of a New York that now, fifty years later, seems as distant as the lost continent of Atlantis. From the first Gay Pride March to Frank Zappa’s thirtieth birthday party, and to the fracture of a treasured friendship with the photographer Peter Hujar during a trip to Mardi Gras, these essays by Steve Turtell depict a life as varied as the scenes and characters it encountered. The text is accompanied by eleven portraits by Peter Hujar of key figures in the essays, including Charles Ludlam, Sheyla Baykal and performers from the legendary Palm Casino Revue. Steve Turtell is a native New Yorker. Since the late 1970s he has published poetry, reviews and essays in numerous journals and queer publications. Portraits and Places is his first collection of prose. Drawing on journals, drafts and memories written over several decades, it recounts his experiences within the artistic and queer communities of New York and beyond. Peter Hujar (1934–1987), now recognized as one of the great American photographers of the twentieth century, is best known for his black-and-white portraits of leading figures of New York’s downtown cultural scene in the 1970s and 1980s. We are looking forward to seeing you! @rdturtle @peterhujarfoundation 📷 Larry Lee Backstage, 1974 @peterhujarfoundation Portraits and Places, Climax Books, London Steve Turtell in conversation with John Douglas Millar Thursday, October 29, 2026 at 7–9 PM Join us for an evening of reading$
