What a privilege to welcome Katharina Hartmuth to Feet First, following her record-setting completion of the Bob Graham Round in July.

The Bob Graham links 42 Lake District peaks over the course of approximately 100k. Taking in 8000+ metres of elevation along the way, for many people it's the achievement of a lifetime to run a sub-24 BGR.

Katharina's time of 14:11 took over 20 minutes off the previous record, set by Beth Pascall in 2020.

When asked recently about whether the added weight of an ice bandana Centurion Coach @jamiepughperformance reminded us that “Endurance performance starts to decline by roughly 0.3–0.4% for each 1°C increase in wet bulb globe temperature above the optimal range (around 15°C).

So even by around 20°, the potential heat-related reduction in performance would already be around 1.5-2%. A bandana would therefore only need to offset a small proportion of that loss to justify carrying it.”

Like our “model” @tom_runs you’ll want to make sure your ice bandana has a good amount of ice in, but also soaked in cold water to help make it as effective as possible.

Head of Endurance @ultrabritton adds “You’re not actually trying to cool yourself down, but rather stop yourself heating up, as once your core temp rises during exercise it’s very difficult to lower it whilst you’re still moving in hot and even moderate temperatures or humidity.”

If you are helping a friend then please be aware that squirting the ice cold water in their face is not required but can be fun. For you, not them.

Training in the desert 🏜️🌵🔥🏃‍♀️

Yesterday I tackled the Keeler (population: 58!) to Lone Pine section of the Badwater 135 course—miles 110–122.

On paper, it’s a completely runnable stretch: endless straight roads, huge mountain views, and scenery that somehow never seems to get any closer.

In reality? You don’t arrive here fresh. By this point you’ve already climbed two massive mountain passes, spent over 24 hours being slowly boiled alive in the Death Valley heat, and you’re heading into your second night of sleep deprivation. Every previous time I’ve been here, I’ve been reduced to a woeful shuffle.

So being able to run these 12 miles on fresh legs was a huge psychological boost. It reminded me that this section is runnable—and that’s a confidence boost I’ll be taking with me into race day.

It was also a great chance for Matthew to get some crewing practice in and test the walkie-talkies. And my new @centurionrunning ice bandana had its first outing—super comfortable, with a huge zipped compartment for ice. I have a feeling that’s going to become one of my favourite bits of kit next week! 🧊❄️

An inspiring evening with the Wheathampstead Warriors and Harpenden Arrows, listening to James Elson share stories from his incredible experience running the legendary Barkley Marathons.

Hosted at the Centurion store, which is an absolute Aladdin's cave for runners, it was the perfect setting for the evening. If you're local, the Centurion pop-up shop in Wheathampstead will next be open on Friday 24 July.

It was fascinating to hear about the physical and mental challenges of one of the world's toughest ultramarathons, along with the determination, resilience, and humour it takes just to make it to the start line.

A huge thank you to Gary and Sherri for organising such a brilliant evening, and especially to James for such an engaging and motivating talk.
