Porcelain boudoir boxes

This year I’ve spent a lot of time observing flowers; painting them, growing, nurturing and picking the ones I’ve grown in my garden.

And these are some of my favourite things that I’ve ever made. A thrown porcelain jewellery box, topped with a hand sculpted flower.

They are finished in glazes that I have mixed myself. Happy to share the blue one as a Murfitt glaze from his book, but the pink one was developed with the help @ceramicmaterialsworkshop.

Of course, now the only problem is I want to cover everything with forever blooms. 🌸☺️

A Lucie Rie you could wear on your sleeve.

After leaving Vienna for London in 1938, Rie had to establish her practice anew. Making buttons for the fashion industry became an important part of her early London work. Hans Coper was among the assistants she employed, beginning a creative relationship that would become one of the great friendships of British studio ceramics.

These press-moulded earthenware buttons, c.1945–47, come from the collection of the jeweller Gerda Flöckinger. Her mother, Anny Frankl-Flöckinger, acquired them through Rie’s representative while working as a designer at Koupy Fashion, and received them on her retirement from the company. A photograph records Gerda wearing some of the dark blue examples on a checked dress.

Decades later, Issey Miyake would admire Rie’s buttons and incorporate examples into his fashion collections. Their small scale carried ideas far beyond the pottery studio.

A beautiful set of small animal sculptures by the loverly Ailsa, who is a wonderful addition to our student classes on Thursday. It’s impressive to see these take shape especially with the dexterity and attention to detail required for all of the small features and decorating.
