Some tiki mugs come with a story. After my friends accidentally discovered a tiki bar in Baños, I figured I should see if there were any in the places I was going to be in Peru. Lima had two, Machu Picchu Pueblo had one, and there was one in Cusco. So, on my last night in Cusco, I decided to check it out.

The address took me to a residential area and I was confused as hell, but I saw a bunch of wood carving stuff out front of an apartment (I knew the owner did wood art), so I figured I must be in the right place. I could see the lights on inside and there were a bunch of people sitting around a table, and I could see some of the art on display and a “tiki lounge” sign in the back.

At the appearance of a random gringo in the window, a gentleman named Cesar opened the door and when I mentioned I was looking for the tiki lounge, welcomed me in. After some initial confusion, I was introduced to Alexandra, Tiki’s wife (Tiki is his nickname) who explained that what I had stumbled into was in fact her birthday and that the bar was officially no longer operational!

Realizing that I was intruding, I asked about buying a piece of jewelry or a mug, and was able to grab up the Moai pictured here, designed by Tiki. Feeling like I had intruded too much already, I tried to turn down several offers to stay for a drink. Eventually, I accepted the offer and plopped down for what ended up being 3 or 4 of the best tiki drinks I’ve ever had; all made with fresh fruits from the area (and I really can’t understate how amazing the fruit in Peru is).

Not everyone spoke English, so I did my best to follow what I could, and was beyond appreciative when folks translated for me or carried on the conversation in English (I really need to learn Spanish, or any other language for that matter 🫠). I heard and shared stories with kind, generous, compassionate, funny, and truly genuine folks who I’d never have met if not for being lucky enough to pick THAT night to check out the Tiki Lounge.

Thank you Tiki and Alexandra for welcoming me into your home and sharing your birthday with me; and thanks to everyone I met that night for a memory that’ll last a lifetime!
