The issue of anti-Asian discrimination and hate crimes is one of the most critical international challenges of our time. While this form of prejudice has garnered widespread global attention recently, systemic discrimination and xenophobia against Asians have spanned across centuries and continents.

Looking back at history, even Indonesia has experienced painful historical moments rooted in racial divide, such as the 1740 Batavia Massacre and the 1998 Asian Financial Crisis, which serve as stark reminders of how discrimination impacts society.

To understand how far this topic reaches today, I recently reached out to several international contacts outside of Asia. Out of those who responded, the vast majority were well aware of the current rise in anti-Asian hate.

The visibility of this issue has reached a peak in recent years, further exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, and the socioeconomic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Physical traits often make individuals of Asian descent easily targetable for racial slurs, harassment, and violence.

However, the root cause of this hatred is not inherent human difference, but rather flawed socialization, processes through which prejudice, stereotypes, and anti-social behaviors are learned and passed down within communities.

Can we stop it? I firmly believe we can. The solution begins with self-education and recognizing that while cultural and physical differences exist, they should never serve as barriers to empathy, respect, and peaceful coexistence.

Change starts with awareness. Let us take a stand together: #StopAsianHate starts with each and every one of us.
