What an awesome day! Maxine (@maxifree) celebrated her birthday by teaching her inaugural Long Beach Yoga Ashtanga class to us, followed by homemade pumpkin cake (courtesy of @markberbig) and lots and lots of laughter. Maxine, we can’t imagine this place without you. Happiest of birthdays!

🌀Unbreakable, unshakable! 🌀

Almost 70 dedicated yogis showed up throughout the morning and afternoon to find their calm during this storm. One even came from East Hampton because he was craving a 90-minute Bikram class!

Special thank you to teacher Adil Rida (@adilridayoga), who still drove in from Brooklyn to teach three classes and share his yoga with us today.

You are all amazing. We are here for you! Stay safe, and we will see you later tonight or tomorrow!

Throwback from summer 2020, when Anne had yoga classes in her back yard! There are two exceptional things of note in this photo:

1. Every single person in this photo has stayed consistent with their yoga practice for the past six years. On any given day, you will see every one of these people in one of our classes.

2. This was Frank’s first yoga class ever. 🙀

Even though the summer is hot, it actually makes hot yoga much easier on your body, because your muscles are already warmed up, your blood vessels are already expanded, and your lungs have already acclimated to the air and humidity. (Added bonus: when you leave class, those 85 degree days actually seem cool!)

He hasn’t even released this song yet…

Last night in Bali… closing fire circle…
no stage, no lights, no expectations…

and then this unfolds.

Michael Franti picks up the guitar and starts playing something none of us have ever heard before…

Unreleased.
Unfiltered.
Just flowing straight through him.

“The sun shined so bright the moon came out to see the light…”

And for a second… everything just got quiet.
Like you could actually feel the moment landing.

And then his son Cappy Franti jumps in…

Freestyling.
Right there in the circle.
No mic. No plan. Just presence.

Father and son…
music moving through them…
and all of us sitting there… not watching… but in it.

No video could ever fully capture what that felt like…
but I had to try.

Grateful isn’t even the word.

Still feeling this one…

Would you have wanted to be in this circle?

Last night… something happened that I’ll never forget.

We’re sitting in our closing fire ceremony circle here at Soulshine… 30 beautiful souls gathered… hearts wide open… reflecting on a week that already felt like pure magic.

And then… out of nowhere…

Michael Franti walks down to the circle with Sara Franti… holding their beautiful baby Lua.

No stage.
No setup.
No plan.

Just love… music… and presence.

He starts playing Brighter Day…
and somehow I find myself sitting right there next to them… with Sara, with my wife Sheila… and we’re singing BACKUP together…

Like… what?! 🤯

It felt like being on stage… but more real than any stage could ever be.
Just humans… voices… hearts… all becoming ONE sound.

These are the moments you can’t plan.
The ones that remind you this world is pure magic when you slow down enough to feel it.

Grateful beyond words.
For the music.
For the people.
For this life.

This is why we do retreats.

🪴GRACEFUL GARDENS🪴

Landscaping season is here. Support your fellow yogi, Grace Guasp (@cguasp1), by using her landscaping service, Graceful Gardens (@graceful_gardenslsd)! This past Sunday, her team came to Jackie and Frank’s house and did a complete overhaul of their yard. They did an amazing job, and Jackie and Frank couldn’t be happier. Support local, support each other!

Marrakech in the house! Friends from the Morocco trip have now joined the studio! Mel and Patricia on the left with long-time member Grace and teacher Adil Rida on the right.

Love Ashtanga? We have it twice a week (Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30 am), and we also have an Ashtanga-inspired vinyasa class on Fridays at 3:30 pm. New to it? You couldn’t be in better hands.

See you on your mat. xoxo

We had to make a proper post of @adilridayoga’s Morocco retreat! Here are some combined photos that people from our group took. For one week, 33 of us spent our days and nights at @babzouina retreat center, a beautiful oasis outside of Marrakech. We took Ashtanga in the morning and yin-yasa at night. Meals were extraordinary farm-to-table (in which the farm was the retreat center itself). We took day trips to the coastal town of Essaouira, to hike through the Atlas Mountains, and to shop in the Marrakech souks.

13 of us then continued on for a second week to the Sahara Desert. Along the way, we stopped in many Berber villages, where the villagers were more than happy to show us how they live. Once we arrived in Merzouga, we rode camels, 4x4s, and even glamped in tents under the stars one night.

This was the trip of a lifetime, and we are so lucky that Adil shared his family’s beautiful country with us. He made it so accessible, so easy, and so pleasurable. Over ten of us from Long Beach were there — maybe there will be even more in the next one!

If you have any questions or want to see more photos, snag any one of us in the lobby. Thank you, Adil.

Missed the retreat? You can come to Ashtanga with Adil every Tuesday morning at 7:30 am! It’s a very foundational class— the root of all modern vinyasa classes. It’s excellent for beginners and long-time practitioners alike. The room is warm (not hot), and we work on the building blocks of yoga. Come on out and give it a try.
