It was such a treat to host Charlotte Korchak last night, and have her share her story and educate our students about Israel and its neighbors.

You know em, you love em, but we’re starting off the year with the true king and queen of Chabad at USC, Dov and Runya Wagner! The Wagners have run the Chabad house for 20 (!!) years at USC. Over that time they’ve provided a home away from home for thousands of students. No one knows or loves the Jewish community at USC better than these two, and they’re so excited to share that love with you. The Wagners love noshing on Pico’s finest delicacies, organizing carpools for their 9 children, and going to Six Flags (ask nicely, and they may let you join). They’re so excited to see you around the chabad house this year!

Today I'm thinking about connection.

They say that you can learn a lot about a culture from its internal vocabulary. The words it chooses to use to express ideas say a lot about the particular understanding and application of those concepts.

In Chabad Chassidic tradition, the term used to describe the relationship of a chassid to the Rebbe is not a follower or even a student. We talk of "hiskashrus" - connection. A chassid connects on a soul-level with his/her rebbe, and thereby is connected to all that the Rebbe is connected to.

'There are three bonds bound up one with the other' states the Zohar. 'The Jewish people, the Torah, and the Holy One.' The Lubavitcher Rebbe used similar tropes in his inaugural Farbrengen, on the day he formally accepted the role of Rebbe: 'Here in America, people love a statement. This is my statement: The three loves – love of G-d, love of the Torah, and love of a fellow Jew – are all one. It is impossible to divide between them, as they are all one essence.'

'Before the Chassidic movement there were also Rebbes and students' writes the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe in the name of the Alter Rebbe's chassidim. 'But then the Rebbe was alone and the students were alone. Chassidus accomplished that the Rebbe isn't alone and the chassidim aren't alone.'

Today is the 3rd of Tammuz, marking 27 years since the Rebbe's passing. Millions around the world are marking this day as an important milestone, as a day of hiskashrus/connection.

Indeed, the Rebbe personified connection. He was a living example of unconditional and unlimited love - personally uplifting and encouraging thousands of people around the world. And he directed, grew, and inspired a world-wide movement dedicated to expressing that same unconditional love and connection.

The Rebbe's teachings connect the deepest esoteric teaching of Kabbalah with a vast scholarship in all other areas, and always conclude with a practical and relatable take-away and real-life application. But they also give us the tools to connect with ourselves.

Mazal Tov Moshe on your graduation from 8th grade! Your class had so much to deal with this past year and a half - learning on Zoom, learning in a tent, learning behind plastic barriers, and so much more. Throughout it all you've made us incredibly proud with your growth and development - excelling in your studies, in the extra-curricular Chidon, in your Ahavas Yisroel, and in becoming a mentch! Wishing you tremendous success as you move on to Yeshiva / high school!
